Inflammatory cytokines in and cognitive function of adolescents with first-episode schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depressive disorder

Mu-Hong Chen et al.

Summary: This study explores the complex relationship between pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines and cognitive function in adolescents with first-episode schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depressive disorder. The findings suggest that these psychiatric disorders are associated with dysregulated cytokine levels and impaired cognitive functioning. These altered cytokine profiles may play important roles in the pathophysiology of these disorders.

Clinical correlates of suicidality and self-injurious behaviour among Canadian adolescents with bipolar disorder

Diana Khoubaeva et al.

Summary: There is a high risk of suicidality in individuals with bipolar disorder, especially in early onset cases. However, there is limited research on the factors and predictors of suicide attempts, non-suicidal self-injury, and suicidal ideation in youth with bipolar disorder. This study found that the majority of adolescents with bipolar disorder had a history of suicide attempts, non-suicidal self-injury, and/or suicidal ideation. Suicide attempts and non-suicidal self-injury were most similar to each other and different from the comparison group, supporting the broader concept of self-harm. Future research should explore the associations of sex differences and neurobiology with the observed clinical differences.

Inflammatory markers, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, and the symptomatic course of adolescent bipolar disorder: A prospective repeated-measures study

Sudhir Karthikeyan et al.

Summary: Elevated levels of pro-inflammatory marker CRP and lower levels of anti-inflammatory marker IL-10 were found in adolescents with BD during the most severe symptomatic interval, indicating a potential association with the course of BD symptoms. Future larger studies are needed to further investigate these findings.

Peripheral biomarkers to predict the diagnosis of bipolar disorder from major depressive disorder in adolescents

Xiaohui Wu et al.

Summary: The study found that using common clinical laboratory tests such as age, DBIL, LDH, FT3, and CRP can effectively distinguish BD from MDD in adolescents. The predictive models showed high accuracy rates, and the external validation also demonstrated good discriminatory ability.

Immature defense mechanisms mediate the relationship between childhood trauma and onset of bipolar disorder

Leilei Wang et al.

Summary: Childhood trauma may contribute to bipolar disorder, with patients experiencing more severe trauma than healthy controls. The relationship between childhood trauma and onset of bipolar disorder is mediated by immature defense mechanisms, with physical neglect and emotional abuse being significant factors in the diagnosis of BD-I and BD-II.

Peripheral levels of C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, and interleukin-1β across the mood spectrum in bipolar disorder: A meta-analysis of mean differences and variability

Marco Solmi et al.

Summary: The study aimed to compare inflammatory mediators in bipolar disorder (BD) with healthy controls, finding that CRP and TNF-alpha may be state markers as they were only elevated during mood episodes, while IL-6 appeared to be a trait marker for BD. The variability of specific inflammatory mediators in specific disease active states suggests that some BD subjects may exhibit elevated inflammation during manic or depressive episodes.

Role of interleukin 8 in depression and other psychiatric disorders

Shih-Jen Tsai

Summary: Low grade neuroinflammation, particularly involving interleukin-8 (IL-8), has been suggested as an underlying mechanism for various psychiatric diseases and cognitive disorders. Elevated peripheral levels of IL-8 have been reported in conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obstructive sleep apnea, and autism spectrum disorder. However, the exact role of IL-8 in major depression remains inconsistent in the literature.
