Association between diet and symptoms of anxiety and depression in college students: A systematic review

Sanjoy Saha et al.

Summary: This study aimed to gather research evidence on the association between diet and depression and anxiety among college students. A systematic review of 21 selected studies found a positive association between diet and depression and anxiety in most cross-sectional studies, although some studies showed inconsistent results. Furthermore, intervention studies demonstrated that a healthy diet, including the consumption of fruits and vegetables, improved depression. The study concludes that more prospective, longitudinal, and randomized controlled trials are needed to establish causal associations between diet and depression and anxiety, and further research is needed to investigate the biological mechanisms of nutrients' actions on anxiety and depression.

The low glutamate diet improves cognitive functioning in veterans with Gulf War Illness and resting-state EEG potentially predicts response

Anna E. Kirkland et al.

Summary: The study tested the low glutamate diet as a novel treatment for cognitive dysfunction among those with GWI. Significant improvements were seen after one-month on the diet in overall cognitive functioning, and in all other domains tested, except for memory. Participants were clustered based on baseline resting-state EEG, showing three distinct EEG clusters with differential cognitive effects during challenge with monosodium glutamate (MSG).

Diet and Mental Health During Emerging Adulthood: A Systematic Review

Sam Collins et al.

Summary: This systematic review examined the associations between diet quality and common mental disorders in emerging adulthood. The findings indicated that emerging adulthood is a critical period for both diet quality and mental health, with moderate support for associations with depression, anxiety, positive/negative affect, suicide ideation, and psychological health. However, the overall methodological quality of the included studies was weak, highlighting the need for further research to better understand the relationship between diet and mental health among emerging adults.

Post-traumatic stress disorder may set the neurobiological stage for eating disorders: A focus on glutamatergic dysfunction

Sidney L. Murray et al.

Summary: PTSD is highly comorbid with eating disorders like anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder, and may involve alterations in glutamatergic neurotransmission leading to excessive excitation and over-activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. These changes could result in damage to multiple brain structures crucial for stress and eating regulation.

Diet and Anxiety: A Scoping Review

Monique Aucoin et al.

Summary: Studies have shown associations between dietary factors and anxiety symptoms or disorder prevalence, such as a decrease in anxiety with more fruits and vegetables, omega-3 fatty acids, and healthy dietary patterns, and an increase in anxiety with high-fat diet and high intake of sugar. Results are limited by a high percentage of animal and observational studies.

Summary: This article discusses how excitotoxicity, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation interact to form a neurotoxic triad, and how specific dietary micronutrients can protect against them. Future dietary interventions may focus on the effects on all three aspects of the neurotoxic triad.
