Improved estimates of strength and stiffness in pathologic vertebrae with bone metastases using CT-derived bone density compared with radiographic bone lesion quality classification

Ron N. Alkalay et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the ability of CT-derived bone lesion quality and computed CT-measured volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) for evaluating the strength and stiffness of cadaver vertebrae with metastatic spinal disease. The results showed that both bone lesion quality and computed vBMD could predict vertebral strength and stiffness, but computed vBMD was more reliable.

Proposed diagnostic volumetric bone mineral density thresholds for osteoporosis and osteopenia at the cervicothoracic spine in correlation to the lumbar spine

Sebastian Ruehling et al.

Summary: There is a strong correlation between trabecular vBMD values in the cervicothoracic and lumbar regions, with vBMD values decreasing with age in both women and men. The proposed cut-off values for osteoporosis peaked at C4 and decreased towards T12, allowing for the determination of low bone mass in clinical cases where only parts of the spine are imaged.

MRI-Based Quantitative Osteoporosis Imaging at the Spine and Femur

Nico Sollmann et al.

Summary: Osteoporosis, a prevalent systemic skeletal disease, can lead to fragility fractures, with DXA being the clinical reference standard. MRI methods play a vital role in investigating the etiology, treatment, and fracture risk associated with osteoporosis, particularly at critical sites like the spine and proximal femur. Advanced imaging techniques such as QSM, UTE, MRS, and CSE-MRI aid in a more accurate assessment of bone quality, aiding in the differentiation of osteoporotic vs. pathologic fractures.

Opportunistic Osteoporosis Screening Reveals Low Bone Density in Patients With Screw Loosening After Lumbar Semi-Rigid Instrumentation: A Case-Control Study

Maximilian T. Loeffler et al.

Summary: The opportunistically assessed BMD was found to be significantly associated with the outcome after spinal surgery, with patients having lower BMD more likely to experience screw loosening. This study suggests that opportunistic BMD screening can help guide surgeons in preventing screw loosening and achieving better outcomes.

Summary: The study compared spinal bone measures derived from automatic and manual assessment in routine clinical CT with dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in their association with prevalent osteoporotic vertebral fractures. The results indicated that CT-based measures outperformed DXA in predicting vertebral fractures, with manual volumetric BMD being the strongest predictor.

Summary: A robust algorithm for field-mapping in the presence of water-fat components, large B0 field inhomogeneities and MR signal voids was developed and applied in body applications of quantitative susceptibility mapping, showing accurate results especially in regions with low SNR, strong field-map variations and high R2* values. The new method outperformed the iterative graph-cut algorithm in improving quantitative susceptibility mapping close to MR signal voids.
