The Curiosity Rover's Exploration of Glen Torridon, Gale Crater, Mars: An Overview of the Campaign and Scientific Results

Kristen A. Bennett et al.

Summary: The Mars Science Laboratory rover Curiosity explored the clay mineral-bearing Glen Torridon region from January 2019 to January 2021, including a short campaign on the Greenheugh pediment. Curiosity roved 5 km in total, collected samples from 11 drill holes, and conducted the first Martian organics detection experiment. The Glen Torridon region hosts abundant phyllosilicates and exhibits a great diversity and abundance of sulfur-bearing organic molecules.

Mission Overview and Scientific Contributions from the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity Rover After Eight Years of Surface Operations

Ashwin R. Vasavada

Summary: NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission has been exploring Gale crater since 2012 to assess Mars' potential to support life. The mission has compiled evidence that the crater had lakes suitable for sustaining life approximately 3.6 billion years ago. The investigation of the modern atmosphere and environment has provided valuable data for future crewed missions.

Overview of the Morphology and Chemistry of Diagenetic Features in the Clay-Rich Glen Torridon Unit of Gale Crater, Mars

Patrick J. J. Gasda et al.

Summary: Researchers analyzed diagenetic features in the clay-rich Glen Torridon region of Mars' Gale crater, finding evidence for multiple generations of fluids and a wide range of chemical reactions. These discoveries provide strong evidence for habitability of groundwater in Gale crater and have implications for prebiotic chemistry in early Mars.

Bedrock Geochemistry and Alteration History of the Clay-Bearing Glen Torridon Region of Gale Crater, Mars

Erwin Dehouck et al.

Summary: Glen Torridon is a topographic trough on Mars with relatively strong spectral signatures of clay minerals. The Curiosity rover explored the area for over 700 Martian days to understand the geologic context of clay mineral formation and determine the intensity of aqueous alteration. Analysis of the bedrock's major-element geochemistry reveals distinct chemical compositions and mineralogical interpretations. Overall, the alteration in Glen Torridon shows elevated Chemical Index of Alteration values, suggesting the formation of clay minerals through open-system weathering.

Orbital and In-Situ Investigation of Periodic Bedrock Ridges in Glen Torridon, Gale Crater, Mars

Kathryn M. Stack et al.

Summary: The study focuses on unique wind-eroded bedrock ridges in the Glen Torridon region of Gale crater on Mars, suggesting they were carved during the exhumation of Mount Sharp. Although questions remain about the formation of these ridges, known as periodic bedrock ridges (PBRs), they provide important insights into the depositional and erosional history of the crater.

The Physical Properties and Geochemistry of Grains on Aeolian Bedforms at Gale Crater, Mars

Catherine M. Weitz et al.

Summary: This study reports on the physical properties and geochemistry of aeolian bedform grains along the Curiosity rover traverse in Gale crater. The dominant grains in the study area are <150 μm in size, with coarser grains present on larger active bedforms. Geochemical measurements show variations in element concentrations according to position and sand activity, with a correlation between Mg and Ni on active surfaces and between Ti and Cr in majority of active sands.

Mars Science Laboratory CheMin Data From the Glen Torridon Region and the Significance of Lake-Groundwater Interactions in Interpreting Mineralogy and Sedimentary History

Michael T. Thorpe et al.

Summary: The Glen Torridon region in Gale crater on Mars exhibits strong clay mineral signatures, which have been confirmed by the CheMin instrument onboard the Curiosity rover. The presence of new phases such as Fe-carbonates and a novel peak at 9.2 angstroms suggests the potential existence of new mineral species on Mars. Co-occurrence of Fe-carbonate and Fe-rich clay minerals supports a conceptual model of a lacustrine groundwater mixing environment in the GT region.

Alteration at the Base of the Siccar Point Unconformity and Further Evidence for an Alkaline Provenance at Gale Crater: Exploration of the Mount Sharp Group, Greenheugh Pediment Cap Rock Contact With APXS

L. M. Thompson et al.

Summary: Chemical data acquired by Curiosity's Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer during examination of the contact between the upper Mount Sharp group and overlying Stimson formation sandstones at the Greenheugh pediment reveal compositional similarities to rocks encountered earlier in the mission. This provides important clues for studying the geological history of Gale crater.

Early diagenesis at and below Vera Rubin ridge, Gale crater, Mars

S. M. R. Turner et al.

Summary: The study used equilibrium thermochemical modeling to analyze data returned by NASA's Curiosity rover, revealing abundant secondary materials on Mars, primarily consisting of Fe-oxides and phyllosilicates. The modeling results suggest that the formation of these minerals is primarily influenced by CO2-poor and oxidizing dilute aqueous solutions, with abundances comparable to observed occurrences.

Brine-driven destruction of clay minerals in Gale crater, Mars

T. F. Bristow et al.

Summary: The sedimentary rock record on Mars provides insight into ancient geological processes, potentially relevant to astrobiology. The Curiosity rover's exploration on Mount Sharp revealed spatial differences in mineralogy and suggested the widespread destabilization of silicate minerals driven by silica-poor brines in ancient Mars.
