Genetic Determinants of Resistance among ESBL-Producing Enterobacteriaceae in Community and Hospital Settings in East, Central, and Southern Africa: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Prevalence

Onduru G. Onduru et al.

Summary: The prevalence of ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-E) in hospitals and communities in East, Central, and Southern Africa is increasing, with the majority carrying the CTX-M-15 gene. Hospital admissions, previous antibiotic use, and herbal medicine usage contribute to the carriage of ESBL-E. Regional or global efforts are needed to combat the antimicrobial resistance problem in the region.

Multicentre study of the burden of multidrug-resistant bacteria in the aetiology of infected diabetic foot ulcers

Adeyemi T. Adeyemo et al.

Summary: The study investigated the etiology and antibiotic resistance burden of infected diabetic foot ulcers in tertiary hospitals in Osun state, Nigeria. Multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacilli were found to be the predominant causative agents of IDFU, while anaerobic bacteria were relatively less common.

Microbial profile, antimicrobial resistance, and molecular characterization of diabetic foot infections in a university hospital

Summary: Multidrug and extensively drug resistant Gram-negative bacteria were dominant among all DFI severity grades, while the proportion of Gram-positive bacteria decreased with infection severity. The clinical role of relatively high anaerobe rates should be further investigated. The study findings could be valuable for future empiric antimicrobial protocols design in relation to DFI severity.
