Characterization of runs of homozygosity, heterozygosity-enriched regions, and population structure in cattle populations selected for different breeding goals

Henrique Alberto Mulim et al.

Summary: This study investigated the population structure and identified the runs of homozygosity (ROH) and heterozygosity-enriched regions (HER) in 16 cattle populations. The results showed population-specific distribution and patterns of ROH and HER, indicating different selection processes or genetic processes among different breeds. The study also revealed candidate genes related to melanogenesis, prolactin signaling, and calcium signaling pathways in the identified homozygosity islands. Additionally, the analysis with whole-genome sequence data uncovered novel regions not captured by SNP panel data.

Fine-scale estimation of inbreeding rates, runs of homozygosity and genome-wide heterozygosity levels in the Mangalarga Marchador horse breed

Wellington Bizarria dos Santos et al.

Summary: This study is the first to explore fine-scale genomic information for the Mangalarga Marchador horse breed, revealing moderate inbreeding potentially linked to breed formation and nullifying recent inbreeding. The research also identified regions of high variability in the MM genome associated with recent selection and important events in the development and performance of MM horses over generations.

Genetic diversity and population history of eight Italian beef cattle breeds using measures of autozygosity

Maria Chiara Fabbri et al.

Summary: In this research, eight Italian beef cattle breeds were analyzed for runs of homozygosity (ROH) using the GeneSeek GGP-LDv4 33k single nucleotide polymorphism chip. Variations in ROH, inbreeding levels, and genomic regions were observed among different breeds, with specific breed-related genetic clusters identified. The study also found significant differences in autozygosity and inbreeding levels among breeds, with certain breeds having a higher frequency of short ROH and higher genomic inbreeding levels.

An evaluation of inbreeding measures using a whole-genome sequenced cattle pedigree

Setegn Worku Alemu et al.

Summary: Estimators relying on the correlation between uniting gametes or on genomic relationships presented the highest correlations with variants causing inbreeding depression, while estimators relying on excess homozygosity or homozygous-by-descent segments were better at capturing whole-genome homozygosity. These results suggest that different estimators may be more suitable for different aspects of inbreeding.
