Assessment of Biofortification Approaches Used to Improve Micronutrient-Dense Plants That Are a Sustainable Solution to Combat Hidden Hunger

Esra Koc et al.

Summary: Malnutrition leads to various health problems globally, with micronutrient deficiency posing a serious challenge. Biofortification is seen as an effective and sustainable agricultural strategy to combat malnutrition. In addition to traditional planting and fertilization methods, genetic biofortification using genetic engineering is also considered a promising solution to micronutrient deficiency.

Identification of Potential Cytokinin Responsive Key Genes in Rice Treated With Trans-Zeatin Through Systems Biology Approach

Dwijesh Chandra Mishra et al.

Summary: Rice is an important staple food that is affected by climate and environmental changes. Plant growth hormone cytokinin plays a crucial role in plant growth and defense systems. This study used systems biology to analyze the cytokinin pathway in rice, identifying functional modules and hub genes, which can contribute to developing stress-resistant rice cultivars.

Nutritional perspectives for the prevention and mitigation of COVID-19

Saeed Akhtar et al.

Summary: Clinical trials are underway globally to evaluate treatment options for COVID-19, with a focus on improving nutrition through micronutrient supplementation to prevent and alleviate the severity of the infection. Deficiencies in micronutrients, particularly vitamins A, B complex, C, and D, zinc, iron, and selenium, are common among vulnerable populations and COVID-19 patients, increasing the risk of mortality. Strategic use of micronutrient supplementation, along with existing fortification programs, is warranted during the current pandemic, especially in low- and middle-income economies.

Biotechnological Approaches to Enhance Zinc Uptake and Utilization Efficiency in Cereal Crops

Pankaj Kumar Verma et al.

Summary: Zinc is a vital micronutrient for healthy growth and development in plants and humans. Zinc deficiency can lead to yield loss and impaired physical growth. Improving zinc use efficiency through modifying root system architecture, solubilization of zinc complex, and optimizing zinc uptake and translocation mechanisms is crucial for increasing zinc content in grains and enhancing grain quality.

Transition From Targeted Breeding to Mainstreaming of Biofortification Traits in Crop Improvement Programs

Parminder S. Virk et al.

Summary: Biofortification breeding has made significant progress, with 393 varieties released or being tested in 63 countries, potentially benefitting over 48 million people. Future breeding efforts should continue to prioritize biofortification to reach the goal of reaching over one billion people by 2030.
