Advanced Spatiotemporal Voltammetric Techniques for Kinetic Analysis and Active Site Determination in the Electrochemical Reduction of CO2

Si-Xuan Guo et al.

Summary: This article introduces two advanced spatiotemporal voltammetric techniques for electrocatalytic studies, which provide important insights into the electrochemical reduction of CO2. Fourier transformed large-amplitude alternating current voltammetry allows the resolution of rapid electron-transfer processes, while scanning electrochemical cell microscopy provides high-resolution activity maps and potentiodynamic movies of catalyst surfaces.

Atomic Co decorated free-standing graphene electrode assembly for efficient hydrogen peroxide production in acid

Zeheng Lin et al.

Summary: A hierarchical porous free-standing ORR electrode comprising cobalt single atoms on vertically aligned graphene nanosheets is demonstrated to achieve high H2O2 productivity. The electrode exhibits close to 100% H2O2 selectivity in an H-cell setup and achieves high peroxide concentration and low energy consumption in a gas-diffusion flow reactor.

Linker-Modulated Peroxide Electrosynthesis Using Metal-Organic Nanosheets

Kiran Kuruvinashetti et al.

Summary: In this study, Ni-based metal-organic nanosheets (Ni-MON) were used as oxygen reduction catalysts for electrochemical synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The physical and electronic structure of the Ni catalytic sites were modulated by changing the composition of the linker, such as introducing hydroxy, amine, and fluorine groups. The Ni-Amine-MON catalyst showed near 100% Faradaic efficiency for H2O2 in alkaline electrolyte. The catalyst was also successfully applied in a gas-diffusion reaction geometry, achieving a H2O2 partial current density of 200 mA/cm(2) while maintaining 85% Faradaic efficiency.

Enhancing carbon dioxide gas-diffusion electrolysis by creating a hydrophobic catalyst microenvironment

Zhuo Xing et al.

Summary: The study found that a hydrophobic microenvironment can significantly enhance CO2 gas-diffusion electrolysis efficiency. Furthermore, a balanced gas/liquid microenvironment can reduce the diffusion layer thickness, accelerate CO2 mass transport, and increase CO2 local concentration for electrolysis.

Tailoring Acidic Oxygen Reduction Selectivity on Single-Atom Catalysts via Modification of First and Second Coordination Spheres

Cheng Tang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the molecular-level local structure, including first and second coordination spheres, plays a critical role in determining the selectivity of catalytic reactions. By modifying the first and second coordination spheres of Co-SACs, it is possible to tailor the oxygen reduction reaction selectivity. The unique selectivity change originates from the structure-dependent shift of active sites, leading to improved activity and selectivity for acidic H2O2 electrosynthesis.

Summary: The study demonstrates that understanding the relationship between surface catalytic activity and bulk defects, such as dislocations, could lead to improvements in catalytic properties, particularly in CO2 electroreduction. Intentionally introducing dislocations into materials appears to be a promising strategy for enhancing catalytic activity.

A Metal-Organic Framework derived CuxOyCz Catalyst for Electrochemical CO2 Reduction and Impact of Local pH Change

Nivedita Sikdar et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed a series of CuxOyCz nanostructured electrocatalysts derived from a Cu-based MOF using porous self-sacrificial templates. By blending these catalysts with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) on gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs), they were able to suppress competitive hydrogen evolution reactions and achieve a Faradaic efficiency of approximately 54% for C2+ products at -80 mA cm(-2). The increase in the OH-/H2O activity ratio due to locally generated OH- ions at higher current densities was observed regardless of the amount of PTFE.
