Learning to be a midwife: Midwifery students' experiences of an extended placement within a midwifery group practice

Kathleen Baird et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the experiences, perspectives, and plans of students who had a six-month placement with a midwifery group practice. The results showed that the students valued this placement experience and considered it to be the highlight of their degree. Most students faced challenges when reintegrating into the hospital system, hoping to utilize their skills of holistic support and facilitating normal birth to a greater extent. The study suggests that health services and universities should actively support student placements within models of care that provide continuity of midwifery care, and further research should be conducted on the long-term impacts of such placements.
