The value of logged tropical forests: A study of ecosystem services in Sabah, Borneo

Nastasia Boul Lefeuvre et al.

Summary: The study shows that no matter the spatial and social demographics, community members consider clean water, clean air, temperature regulation, flood and erosion prevention to be the most important ecosystem services. Prioritization of other ecosystem services varies based on age, gender, ethnicity, dependence on forest resources, and proximity to the forest. Community members' priorities for ecosystem services align with the ecological literature that these services are retained by logged forests.

Drivers of deforestation and degradation for 28 tropical conservation landscapes

H. Manjari Jayathilake et al.

Summary: Commercial and subsistence agriculture are the main drivers of deforestation in 28 tropical conservation landscapes, followed by settlement expansion and infrastructure development. Landscape managers anticipate continued deforestation trends in the future, highlighting the need for urgent measures to mitigate these trends.

Perspectives on area-based conservation and its meaning for future biodiversity policy

Nina Bhola et al.

Summary: In 2021, CBD Parties are expected to meet in Kunming, China, to agree on a new global biodiversity framework focused on halting and reversing biodiversity loss, promoting sustainable use of biodiversity, and ensuring equitable sharing of benefits. Various perspectives exist on area-based conservation measures, representing different views on the relationship between human and nonhuman life on Earth. Despite differences, these perspectives can all contribute to achieving the goals of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework and the longer term CBD 2050 Vision, with commonalities observed even among conflicting viewpoints.

Considering landscape-level processes in ecosystem service assessments

Jean Paul Metzger et al.

Summary: The provision of ecosystem services is spatially influenced by landscape structure, but landscape-level processes are often not comprehensively considered in assessments, with a focus on supply rather than demand and flows. It is necessary to better incorporate landscape processes in order to achieve more accurate and spatially precise estimates in ecosystem service assessments.

Landscape structure shapes the diversity of tree seedlings at multiple spatial scales in a fragmented tropical rainforest

Sergio Nicasio-Arzeta et al.

Summary: The study found that the diversity of animal-dispersed tree seedlings in highly deforested rainforests is strongly influenced by landscape configuration. Specifically, the amount of secondary forest influenced α-diversity, and increased species richness was mainly observed in landscapes with highly aggregated forest patches.

Ecosystem services and gender in rural areas of Nicaragua: Different perceptions about the landscape

Jaime Andres Cifuentes-Espinosa et al.

Summary: The study of Ecosystem services (ES) is growing slowly in Latin America compared to the rest of the world, despite its rich biological and cultural diversity. This research in Nicaragua focused on rural communities' perceptions of land use as providers of ES from a gender perspective, finding that men and women differ in identifying the most important land uses for ES provision.

Landscapes on the Move: Land-Use Change History in a Mexican Agroforest Frontier

Carolina Berget et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the recent history of land-use change in two rural villages in Southern Mexico from 1976 to 2019 using qualitative ethnographic research and quantitative remote sensing analysis. The findings suggest that historical social-ecological drivers have influenced each village's unique landscape composition and livelihood diversification implications. Landscape history research in tropical agroforest frontiers is necessary to inform land-use policies and conservation strategies compatible with local livelihoods and conservation goals.
