A Review of Decision Making Under Deep Uncertainty Applications Using Green Infrastructure for Flood Management

Marissa K. Webber et al.

Summary: Decision making under deep uncertainty is crucial for managing flooding exacerbated by climate change. Green infrastructure, as an important adaptation strategy, has multiple co-benefits and is characterized as low-regret under uncertainty. However, there is limited research on the integration of green infrastructure in decision making under deep uncertainty. This paper reviews publications that use decision making under deep uncertainty frameworks and focus on green infrastructure adaptation strategies in flood management, identifying trends and proposing solutions for future research.

Green infrastructure: systematic literature review

Jun Ying et al.

Summary: Research on green infrastructure has shown a growing trend in recent years, mostly concentrated in European and American countries, focusing on areas such as the relationship between green infrastructure and ecosystems and human health, construction, evaluation and management, as well as stormwater management, ecosystem services, biodiversity protection and climate change.

Optimizing green infrastructure placement under precipitation uncertainty

Masoud Barah et al.

Summary: Increased urbanization, infrastructure degradation, and climate change pose threats to stormwater systems nationwide, making them ineffective. Green Infrastructure (GI) practices offer low-cost strategies for urban runoff management. Utilizing stochastic programming models can help determine optimal placement of GI practices to minimize total expected runoff under precipitation uncertainties.

Designing adaptation pathways for flood-affected households in Bangladesh

Ranjan Roy et al.

Summary: The study aimed to design adaptation pathways to enhance the livelihood resilience of flood-affected households in Bangladesh. Through resilience assessment, PCA analysis for determining adaptation options, and stakeholder engagement workshops, short-, medium-, and long-term adaptation options were identified to maintain persistence, lead to transition, and facilitate transformation in the face of flooding. Critical policy implications were outlined for governance strengthening, economy promotion, and technology management.

Towards a performance-based approach for multifunctional green roofs: An interdisciplinary review

Lauren M. Cook et al.

Summary: Green roofs have the potential to offer multiple ecosystem services, but are often limited by perceived structural and maintenance constraints. To improve sustainability and resilience of cities, design should match promised multi-functional application through performance-based methods. Collaborations across disciplines are needed to optimize design parameters based on stakeholder preferences for co-benefits and constraints.

A 'green' chameleon: Exploring the many disciplinary definitions, goals, and forms of green infrastructure

Marissa Matsler et al.

Summary: The concept of green infrastructure (GI) varies in different contexts, including differences in definitions and goals across different disciplinary fields, which can affect its application and outcomes in practice. There are many related concepts associated with GI, and scholars and practitioners need to explicitly define GI and its purpose to avoid confusion or subpar outcomes when implementing GI projects.

Incorporating climate change in flood estimation guidance

Conrad Wasko et al.

Summary: Research on the implications of climate change on flood hazard has progressed significantly in the past decade, but efforts to translate this research into practical guidance for flood estimation are still in their early stages. Although climate science involves varying levels of uncertainty, many jurisdictions worldwide have started incorporating climate change into their flood guidance, signaling the need for more flexible design and planning approaches.

The climate benefits, co-benefits, and trade-offs of green infrastructure: A systematic literature review

Changsoon Choi et al.

Summary: Climate change poses risks to natural and human systems, prompting the need for solutions such as green infrastructure (GI). While the climate benefits of GI have been studied extensively, the connections between these benefits, co-benefits, and trade-offs remain unclear. This study systematically reviews evidence from 141 papers to provide a comprehensive overview of these linkages, categorizing GI types along a green-grey continuum for easy access by researchers and practitioners. Furthermore, the analysis includes recommendations for maximizing benefits and minimizing trade-offs to promote climate-resilient pathways through GI.

Framing nature-based solutions to climate change

Shannon Osaka et al.

Summary: Research has shown that natural climate solutions play an important role in mitigating and adapting to climate change, but the framing of these solutions as natural can lead to overlooking their risks and drawbacks. The labeling of solutions as natural tends to result in them being perceived as more beneficial, cost-effective, mature, and democratic than artificial counterparts, despite the fact that they may also have negative aspects. The dangers of narrowing the consideration of natural solutions and selecting solutions based on nature are reflected upon, emphasizing the need for a broader evaluation of climate solutions.
