Designing a closed-loop supply chain for reusable packaging materials: A risk-averse two-stage stochastic programming model using CVaR

Summary: Reusable packaging materials provide a circular and sustainable way of transportation along the supply chain. This study focuses on the design problem of a supply chain network for wooden packaging materials. The uncertainties associated with the demand and reusability level of the materials are incorporated using a risk-averse two-stage stochastic programming model. The results show the trade-off among various cost components and provide managerial insights.

Circular supply chains in the era of industry 4.0: A systematic literature review

Summary: This paper discusses the synergistic implementation of Circular Economy (CE) and Industry 4.0 (I4.0) in industrial contexts and its impact on Supply Chain (SC) efficiency and competitiveness. A systematic literature review is conducted to investigate and systematize the knowledge around circular SC enabled by CE and I4.0. The study identifies the major trends in terms of contribution type, LC phases, I4.0 technologies, Triple Bottom Line (TBL) layers, CE strategies, and SC typologies. The results show a predominance of economic and environmental aspects in sustainability, a prevalence of internet of things, big data analytics, and cloud technologies in I4.0, and a focus on reuse-recycle-remanufacturing, waste management, and material/energy efficiency in CE strategies. The paper contributes to building an integrated knowledge of the threefold research context and provides a theoretical framework for practitioners to approach the transition to circular SC.

Pareto optimality and contract dependence in supply chain coordination with risk-averse agents

Summary: In this paper, the authors provide a comprehensive analysis of supply chain coordination (SCC) with risk-averse agents. They find that achieving Pareto optimality (PO) depends on the contract type and present challenges when using it as the criterion for SCC. The authors also explore multiretailer, multimanufacturer, and multitier supply chains and design coordinating contracts to achieve PO. However, identifying PO becomes difficult when considering other risk-aversion criteria. The paper concludes by offering suggestions and methods for SCC when PO cannot be identified.

Channel coordination and profit distribution in a three-echelon supply chain considering social responsibility and product returns

Coordinating a closed loop supply chain with fairness concern by a constant wholesale price contract

Summary: The literature on closed loop supply chains has overlooked advantageous inequality aversion in modelling the fairness concern of channel partners, showing that coordinating a decentralized channel requires complex price contracts. This paper demonstrates that a constant wholesale price contract can effectively coordinate a manufacturer-led CLSC if the retailer's advantageous inequality aversion is strong. The results show that higher collection rates and channel profits are achieved when the retailer exhibits inequality aversion compared to profit maximization, regardless of the end-of-use product collector.

Optimal operations of a closed-loop supply chain under a dual regulation

Summary: The implementation of a deposit-refund policy for waste electrical and electronic equipment has led to significant economic and environmental benefits, however, challenges arise as the collected disposal fees are insufficient to cover recycling subsidies. Introducing a dual regulation regime and optimizing subsidy and disposal fee levels can help mitigate the deposit-refund policy deficit and improve supply chain operations. Analysis shows that the brand owner's collection and OEM's remanufacturing strategies are closely linked to the dual regulation, with impacts on profits and environmental performance.

Complex Dynamics in a Closed-Loop Supply Chain with Risk Aversion and Fairness Concerns Under Supply Disruption

Furthermore, fast adjustment speed of the manufacturer may not be beneficial for all channel members, but the third party can perform better in periodic state.
