Engineering strategies and opportunities of next generation biofuel from microalgae: A perspective review on the potential bioenergy feedstock

S. Thanigaivel et al.

Summary: The quest for alternate fuels with reduced environmental impact is increasing. Sugar cane, corn, and soybeans have been used to make first-generation biofuels, while lignocellulosic crops and forest leftovers are used for second-generation biofuels. However, microalgae show potential as the primary source for third-generation biofuels due to their lack of limitations.

Cladophora sp. as a sustainable feedstock for dark fermentative biohydrogen production

Banu Taskan et al.

Summary: This study found that low inoculum/substrate ratios in the fermentation process caused excessive accumulation of metabolic products and a significant decrease in pH, resulting in decreased hydrogen production efficiency. Cladophora sp. biomass was proven to be an efficient fermentation feedstock for biohydrogen production.

Processes, applications and legislative framework for carbonized anaerobic digestate: Opportunities and bottlenecks. A critical review

Arianna Catenacci et al.

Summary: This work reviews the integration of anaerobic digestion (AD) with pyrolysis/HTC, focusing on the use of AD digestates as feedstocks for char production. This interconnected approach can enhance the sustainable valorization of digestates in the circular economy. Different substrates and thermochemical technologies are discussed, with an analysis of their effects on char quality. The potential applications of char are presented, along with their advantages and drawbacks. However, limitations such as substrate variability, presence of pollutants, lack of legislative frameworks, and uncertain economic sustainability still hinder the full-scale implementation of digestate-derived char production and utilization.

Miscanthus: A fast-growing crop for environmental remediation and biofuel production

Congpeng Wang et al.

Summary: Miscanthus, as an herbaceous perennial, has shown great potential in bioenergy production and ecological remediation due to its high yield and environmental adaptability. It has high biomass yield, calorific value, and cellulose content compared to other lignocellulosic bioenergy crops, making it a promising feedstock for second-generation biofuels. Miscanthus can also endure soil pollution and adverse environmental conditions, making it suitable for ecological remediation applications. However, further efforts are needed in genetic improvement, elite cultivar breeding, large-scale cultivation, and efficient biofuel conversion when utilizing Miscanthus as a bioenergy crop. Additionally, more work is required to fully unleash its phytoremediation potential.

Biodegradation of hydrophobic pesticides by microalgae: Transformation products and impact on algae biochemical methane potential

Romina Avila et al.

Summary: The study found that a microalgae consortium can effectively remove pesticides from water, with chlorpyrifos and cypermethrin showing the best removal efficiency, and a transformation product of chlorpyrifos was identified. Anaerobic digestion was not inhibited by the pesticides, and the removal efficiency of the pesticides in the digestate decreased in the order of chlorpyrifos > cypermethrin > oxadiazon.
