Mechanical behavior of 3D-printed polymeric metamaterials for lightweight applications

Eliza Truszkiewicz et al.

Summary: The study provides an overview of the mechanical behavior of four differently designed and 3D-printed metamaterial structures. Compression tests and bending tests were conducted to demonstrate the wide range of material properties achievable by utilizing different materials and 3D-printing techniques. A comparison between experiments and numerical simulations offered further insight into local deformation mechanisms and overall deformation behavior, contributing to a better understanding of the structures.

Flexible planar metamaterials with tunable Poisson's ratios

Nicholas Pagliocca et al.

Summary: This research focuses on the design, fabrication, and mechanical characterization of flexible, planar mechanical metamaterials with tunable properties. By introducing different geometric perforations, the structures exhibit adjustable mechanical behavior and a wide range of Poisson's ratios. The study highlights the correlation between perforation configurations and auxetic response, and proposes a practical strategy for activating a self-strengthening mechanism in the structures. It also demonstrates the feasibility of fabricating planar flexible structures with controllable Poisson's ratios through spatial adjustment of perforations.

Functional mechanical metamaterial with independently tunable stiffness in the three spatial directions

M. Fleisch et al.

Summary: The article introduces a new type of bending-dominated metamaterial that allows for independent variation of stiffness in three spatial directions, enabling the design of structures from isotropic to anisotropic. The compression modulus can vary over several orders of magnitude. Various numerical models were used to study the mechanical properties and were validated by experiments.

Optimal design of chiral metamaterials with prescribed nonlinear properties

Kepeng Qiu et al.

Summary: This paper optimized chiral metamaterials under finite strain, maintaining effective elastic constants unchanged. The unit cell method was used to compute effective elastic properties, while topology optimization and shape optimization were employed for conceptual and fine design respectively. Genetic algorithm was used to solve optimization problems, with optimal models fabricated through 3D printing.
