The complete mitochondrial genomes of Notiophilus quadripunctatus Dejean, 1826 and Omophron limbatum (Fabricius, 1777): New insights into the mitogenome phylogeny of the Carabidae (Insecta, Coleoptera)

Michael J. Raupach et al.

Summary: This study sequenced the complete mitochondrial genomes of two species in the Carabidae family and analyzed their phylogenetic relationships. The results revealed that Omophrom limbatum is sister to all other analyzed ground beetle species, while Notiophilus quadripunctatus is sister to Nebria brevicollis within the Nebriinae subfamily. The analysis also supported the monophyly of the Cicindelidae family but placed Trachypachus holmbergi within the Carabidae family.

Complete Mitochondrial DNA Genome of Nine Species of Sharks and Rays and Their Phylogenetic Placement among Modern Elasmobranchs

Vasiliki Kousteni et al.

Summary: This study obtained the complete mitochondrial genome sequences of various Chondrichthyes species through whole genome sequencing and reconstructed the phylogenetic relationships among 172 species using Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference analyses. The results did not support the Hypnosqualea hypothesis, confirming the monophyly of sharks and rays. High statistical support values were obtained for the phylogenetic placement of all nine species sequenced in this study.

Are well-studied marine biodiversity hotspots still blackspots for animal barcoding?

Francesco Mugnai et al.

Summary: The study presents the current status of marine animal species globally, comparing data from the past decade and identifying disparities in COI barcoding coverage between different geographic regions and phyla. Barcoding coverage varies among different Large Marine Ecosystems and phyla, with some phyla like Porifera, Bryozoa, and Platyhelminthes being underrepresented compared to others. The increase in barcoded marine species from 9.5% to 14.2% over the past decade highlights the need for concrete collaborative efforts to expand animal barcoding libraries in the marine realm for the future.

Biodiversity of coral reef cryptobiota shuffles but does not decline under the combined stressors of ocean warming and acidification

Molly A. Timmers et al.

Summary: Ocean-warming increased species richness while acidification reduced it. However, the combined future ocean treatment with both warming and acidification did not show significant difference in species richness compared to present-day control treatment.

Poor data stewardship will hinder global genetic diversity surveillance

Rachel H. Toczydlowski et al.

Summary: Genomic data are being generated and archived rapidly, but a lack of spatiotemporal metadata poses challenges for genetic diversity monitoring. Only a small fraction of genomic datasets contain geographic coordinates and collection years, highlighting the need for streamlined data processes and updated policies to address the growing metadata gap.
