Photosensitized Thermoplastic Nano-Photocatalysts Active in the Visible Light Range for Potential Applications Inside Extraterrestrial Facilities

Lidia Mezzina et al.

Summary: Photocatalysis activated by solar light is a promising method for terrestrial outdoor depollution. However, it cannot be applied in underground structures and/or microgravity environments. This study synthesized a filmable nanocomposite to enhance photocatalytic activity, which shows potential for use in indoor deep underground and extraterrestrial structures.

TiO2-Based Nanocomposites Thin Film Having Boosted Photocatalytic Activity for Xenobiotics Water Pollution Remediation

Angelo Nicosia et al.

Summary: Photocatalytic remediation is a potential sustainable solution for handling xenobiotic pollutants in the water environment, with TiO2 NPs showing promise in the form of thin films. The use of titanium dioxide-based nanocomposites prepared through a new approach enhances photodegradation activity, particularly when compared to blended mixtures.

Flammability and Thermal Kinetic Analysis of UiO-66-Based PMMA Polymer Composites

Ruiqing Shen et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging as novel flame retardants for polymers, improving their thermal stability and flame retardancy. The lack of specific studies on the thermal decomposition kinetics of MOF-based polymer composites is a gap. Combining UiO-66 and SiO2 to form a composite can reduce the burning intensity and mass loss rate of PMMA.

Applicability of composite materials for space radiation shielding of spacecraft

Masayuki Naito et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that composite materials have higher radiation shielding capabilities and can be used for components and fixtures of space vehicles. Compared to aluminum and polyethylene, the stopping power of composite materials used in the study is intermediate, and the total charge-changing cross sections per unit mass are also larger.

Is Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) a Suitable Substrate for ALD?: A Review

Marta Adriana Forte et al.

Summary: PMMA, a thermoplastic synthetic polymer, demonstrates superior characteristics such as transparency, good tensile strength, and processability. Surface engineering using functionalized thin film coatings can enhance its performance for applications like energy harvesting, dielectric layers, and water purification. However, the lack of active surface sites in PMMA poses a challenge for atomic layer deposition (ALD), a vapor-phase chemical deposition technique. This review discusses research on employing PMMA as a substrate, support, or masking layer in various ALD thin film growth techniques and highlights its applications in flexible electronics, biomaterials, sensing, and photocatalysis. Relevant characterization techniques are also underscored.
