Synthesis, Characterization, and Surface Analysis of Near-β Ti20Nb20Zr Alloy Proceeded by Powder Metallurgy for Biomedical Applications

M. A. Hussein

Summary: A new near-beta Ti20Nb20Zr alloy was designed and synthesized using d-electron alloy design and the molybdenum equivalence approach. After ball milling and spark plasma sintering, the alloy showed nanocrystalline beta-Ti and alpha-Ti solid solutions with enhanced wettability compared to commercial Ti-6Al-4V alloys.

Fabrication of nanocrystalline austenitic stainless steel with superior strength and ductility via binder assisted extrusion method

L. Heidari et al.

Summary: The use of binder and sintering aid significantly reduces the porosity of biomedical austenitic stainless steel, resulting in a microstructure consisting of nanocrystalline austenite and amorphous phases. Mechanical properties such as compressive strength are superior to those produced through conventional methods, and the process is suitable for large scale industrial production at a reasonable cost.

Effect of ECAP and annealing on structure and mechanical properties of metastable beta Ti-18Zr-15Nb (at.%) alloy

V Sheremetyev et al.

Summary: The effect of ECAP and annealing at different temperatures on the Ti-18Zr-15Nb biomedical alloy results in changes in its structure and mechanical properties. The formation of a predominantly nanocrystalline structure leads to higher strength, while a submicrocrystalline structure promotes ductility in the alloy.

Martensite twin formation and mechanical properties of B2 austenite NiTi shape memory alloy undergoing severe plastic deformation and subsequent annealing

Bingyao Yan et al.

Summary: B2 austenite NiTi shape memory alloy can undergo severe plastic deformation and annealing to form nanostructured NiTi SMA with unique martensite twin structures. The stress-induced martensite transformation of NiTi SMA is related to grain size, with nanostructured NiTi SMA possessing higher yield stress compared to solution-treated NiTi SMA. Grain refinement plays a significant role in enhancing the yield stress of NiTi samples.

Synthesis of biocompatible high-entropy alloy TiNbZrTaHf by high-pressure torsion

Jeimmy Gonzalez-Masis et al.

Summary: In this study, biocompatible nanostructured high-entropy alloys were successfully synthesized using the high-pressure torsion method. The research compared the characteristics of different alloys and found that as the number of principal elements increased, hardness increased and grain size decreased, but these variations became less significant with further increase in configurational entropy.

Effect of grain size and crystallographic structure on the corrosion and tribocorrosion behaviour of a CoCrMo biomedical grade alloy in simulated body fluid

Righdan Namus et al.

Summary: CoCrMo alloys are commonly used for hip and knee replacements due to their excellent long-term survival rates, but recent studies have shown high failure rates associated with adverse tissue reactions. Samples processed using high-pressure torsion (HPT) exhibited decreased corrosion resistance, and the contribution of mechanical and corrosion material loss in tribocorrosion was also examined.
