Bio-inspired, sustainable and mechanically robust graphene oxide-based hybrid networks for efficient fire protection and warning

Cheng-Fei Cao et al.

Summary: This study presents a new route for the design and development of environmentally friendly fireproof and fire alarm materials based on the effective utilization of natural biomass-derivatives. By constructing synergistic interactions among graphene oxide nanosheets, phosphorylated-cellulose nanofibrils, and tannic acid molecules, a hybrid interconnected network with a hierarchical nacre-like structure was achieved. It exhibited improved mechanical properties, good structural stability, excellent flame retardancy, and ultrasensitive fire alarm functions. Furthermore, this network can act as an effective flame-retardant nanocoating to significantly improve the flame retardancy of combustible PU foam materials.
