Molecular Mechanisms of Early Flowering in Tomatoes Induced by Manganese Ferrite (MnFe2O4) Nanomaterials

Le Yue et al.

Summary: The study found that customized manganese ferrite nanomaterials can significantly improve the growth and yield of tomatoes. Foliar application of nanomaterials increased chlorophyll content, improved photosynthesis efficiency, and altered gene expression in leaves. The nanomaterials also promoted long-distance transport of sucrose and hormone biosynthesis, resulting in earlier flowering and increased fruit production in tomatoes. Additionally, the nutritional value of tomato fruits was enhanced.

Interaction of hyperaccumulating plants with Zn and Cd nanoparticles

Davide Imperiale et al.

Summary: Metal hyperaccumulating plants are an interesting example of natural selection and environmental adaptation. This study compared the tolerance, uptake, and translocation of zinc sulfide and cadmium sulfide quantum dots by hyperaccumulators N. caerulescens and A. halleri, as well as non-hyperaccumulators T. perfoliatum and A. thaliana. The results showed that hyperaccumulators accumulated both ionic and nanoscale Zn and Cd in their aerial parts, and a significant fraction of nanoscale metals remained within the plants. This is the first report of hyperaccumulating plants demonstrating the ability to hyperaccumulate engineered nanomaterials, providing insights into plant-nanomaterial interactions and potential biomonitoring strategies.

Triiron Tetrairon Phosphate (Fe7(PO4)6) Nanomaterials Enhanced Flavonoid Accumulation in Tomato Fruits

Zhenyu Wang et al.

Summary: Flavonoids contribute to fruit sensorial and nutritional quality, and can effectively prevent chronic diseases. This study demonstrates that the addition of nano-enabled triiron tetrairon phosphate (Fe-7(PO4)(6)) nanomaterials (NMs) in soil enhances flavonoids accumulation in tomato fruits. Fe-7(PO4)(6) NMs promote proton efflux and rhizosphere acidification, facilitating the uptake of Mg, Fe, and Mn by plants. This leads to increased synthesis and transportation of photosynthate, resulting in enhanced flavonoid biosynthesis. The study highlights the potential of NMs in improving fruit quality by enhancing flavonoid synthesis and accumulation.

Citric Acid-Functionalized CuO Nanoparticles Alter Biochemical Responses in Candyland Red Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum)

Jesus M. Cantu et al.

Summary: Investigations have shown that the effects of copper-based nanoparticles (NPs) on plant growth and fruit production vary depending on whether the NPs are pristine or surface-modified. In this study, tomato plants were exposed to different types of CuO NPs and the results showed that the treatments affected the levels of soluble proteins in the roots and starch content in the fruit. However, the levels of bioactive compounds were not significantly affected. Furthermore, the exposure to CuO NPs caused redistribution of copper and iron throughout the entire plant and fruit.

Critical Review: Role of Inorganic Nanoparticle Properties on Their Foliar Uptake and in Planta Translocation

Astrid Avellan et al.

Summary: This article introduces the application of nanostructures in agriculture, discussing the gaps in knowledge about the transport of nanoparticles on leaf surfaces and their behavior in plants, as well as foliar uptake routes and translocation pathways. The study highlights the feasibility of targeting nanoparticles to specific plant compartments by design, and emphasizes the overlooked parameters such as time and plant growth in the literature.
