Climate change and early urbanism in Southwest Asia: A review

Dan Lawrence et al.

Summary: During the Late Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age in the Fertile Crescent of Southwest Asia, the world's earliest development of cities occurred. The emergence of cities coincided with a decoupling of settlement and climate trends, potentially enhancing societies' adaptive capacity to changing climatic conditions. Climate and environmental factors played significant roles in urban growth.

Genetic Variability and Population Structure of the Tunisian Sicilo-Sarde Dairy Sheep Breed Inferred from Microsatellites Analysis

Yousra Ben Sassi-Zaidy et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the genetic variability, inbreeding, and population structure of the Tunisian-North African dairy sheep breed, the Sicilo-Sarde. The results showed that the breed has a high level of genetic diversity and has not undergone a population bottleneck. The study also found that the introduction of new genes through breeding programs has positively impacted the genetic diversity of the breed.

Sheep Post-Domestication Expansion in the Context of Mitochondrial and Y Chromosome Haplogroups and Haplotypes

Karolina Machova et al.

Summary: Mitochondrial DNA and nonrecombinant parts of Y-chromosome DNA are valuable tools for studying a species' past, with a focus on the development and expansion of domestic sheep. The variability of male haplogroups and haplotypes in central China is particularly notable.

The biometry of prehistoric Alpine sheep: exploring four millennia of human-sheep interaction by means of osteometry

Simon Trixl

Summary: This study investigates the phenotypic alterations in Alpine sheep during 4500 years of prehistoric livestock farming, analyzing factors such as climatic fluctuations, cultural transfer, physical adaptation to high altitude pasturing, wool farming, and introduction of allochthonous livestock as potential triggers for morphological changes in Alpine livestock.

Soay Sheep: The Back-story

Andrew Fleming

Summary: The primitive race of Soay sheep from the St Kilda archipelago in northwest Scotland has had a significant impact on the history of domestic sheep. The Soays were confined to the island of Soay, with the ferocious rams having a competitive edge over newer sheep breeds. The transfer of Soays to Hirta in the 1930s led to the long-running Soay Sheep Project and highlighted the cultural significance of the historical exploitation of these sheep by the islanders of St Kilda.

Early Holocene greening of the Sahara requires Mediterranean winter rainfall

Rachid Cheddadi et al.

Summary: The study shows that the northern Sahara and the Mediterranean region were wetter during the African Humid Period due to increased winter precipitation, not solely influenced by the monsoon. The increased seasonal contrast of insolation led to a strengthening and southward shift of the Mediterranean winter precipitation system, in addition to intensified summer monsoon. This seasonal distribution of rainfall, rather than the increased monsoon alone, was found to be more efficient in generating a green Sahara vegetation cover in the Early Holocene.

Geoarchaeological and Paleo-Hydrological Overview of the Central-Western Mediterranean Early Neolithic Human-Environment Interactions

Jean-Francois Berger

Summary: Archaeologist-neolithicists are still debating the impact of climate change, with a need for further research on its exact chronology and effects. High chronological resolution and comparative approach are essential for studying the causality of socio-environmental processes during Neolithisation. Off-site geoarchaeological and paleoenvironmental methods offer new research perspectives to address these issues.
