Complete mitochondrial genome of the gate-keeper ant Colobopsis nipponica (Wheeler, WM, 1928) (Formicidae: Hymenoptera)

Jonghyun Park et al.

Summary: Colobopsis ants are notable for their phragmotic behavior. The mitochondrial genome of Colobopsis nipponica has been sequenced, representing the first mitochondrial genome of this genus. The mitochondrion is the third longest in the subfamily Formicinae, supporting the recent elevation of Colobopsis from subgenus to genus.

Summary: The study identified the mitochondrial genome of Linepithema humile collected in South Korea, revealing new SNPs and INDELs compared to the previous genome, as well as a different haplotype. Phylogenetic analysis was consistent with previous studies within the tribe Leptomyrmecini, but not between other tribes in the subfamily Dolichoderinae.

Effect of social structure and introduction history on genetic diversity and differentiation

Sylvia M. Flucher et al.

Summary: Invasive species pose a global threat to biodiversity, and analyzing population genetics helps understand factors contributing to their invasion success. Comparison of two closely related ant species with different social structures and invasion histories revealed reduced genetic diversity in introduced populations, with more severe consequences observed in recently introduced and supercolonial species. Additionally, the study highlighted how social structure, such as monogyny and polygyny, can influence genetic consequences of founder events in invasive populations.

Impact of invasive ant species on native fauna across similar habitats under global environmental changes

Junaid Ali Siddiqui et al.

Summary: Biotic invasions, particularly by invasive ant species, can have devastating effects on ecosystems, leading to biodiversity loss and harmful impacts on habitat and native species. Regulating the mode and rate of invasion by alien species is crucial in deterring future invasions and maintaining biodiversity.

The complete mitochondrial genome of a parthenogenetic ant Monomorium triviale (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

Naoto Idogawa et al.

Summary: Monomorium is a species-rich ant genus with taxonomic issues, and the East Asian species M. triviale reproduces through obligate thelytokous parthenogenesis and strict reproductive division of labor. The mitogenome of M. triviale, which was sequenced using next-generation methods, is circular in shape and consists of 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNAs, and a non-coding region. Gene order rearrangements were detected, likely unique to the Monomorium genus, making the M. triviale mitogenome a valuable genomic resource for phylogenetic and taxonomic studies on parthenogenetic ant species.
