Sports compression garments improve resting markers of venous return and muscle blood flow in male basketball players

Shane F. O'Riordan et al.

Summary: This study combined Doppler ultrasound and near-infrared spectroscopy technologies to comprehensively evaluate the effects of different types of sports compression garments on markers of venous return and muscle blood flow at rest. The results showed that sports compression garments can increase venous return, muscle blood flow, and muscle oxygenation. Among them, tights are the most effective, possibly because they can compress a larger body area.

Climbing-Specific Exercise Tests: Energy System Contributions and Relationships With Sport Performance

Marcin Maciejczyk et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate performance indicators and energy system contributions in different finger flexor muscle exercise tests. The results showed that aerobic metabolism contributed the most in the intermittent test, while anaerobic alactic energy contribution was highest in the all-out test.

A below-knee compression garment reduces fatigue-induced strength loss but not knee joint position sense errors

Janos Negyesi et al.

Summary: Wearing a below-knee compression garment can help reduce fatigue-induced strength loss in healthy adults, particularly at the knee joint position of 80 degrees, but it does not have an effect on joint position sense errors.

The anaerobic threshold: 50+years of controversy

David C. Poole et al.

Summary: The anaerobic threshold (AT) is a controversial concept in exercise physiology and medicine, originally thought to be caused by muscle anoxia but now understood to be a response to increased glycolytic flux. Lactate is now appreciated as an important energy source and signaling molecule, with non-invasive estimation of LT using the gas exchange threshold remaining important in exercise training and in the clinic.

Isolated finger flexor vs. exhaustive whole-body climbing tests? How to assess endurance in sport climbers?

Jiri Balas et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate systemic and local muscle oxygen responses during sport climbing. The results showed that both systemic and muscle oxygen kinetics determine climbing-specific endurance, and exhaustive climbing and isolated finger flexion endurance tests are interrelated and suitable for assessing climbing-specific endurance. An exhaustive climbing test with progressive wall angle allows determination of the muscle oxygenation breakpoint.

Reduced post-exercise muscle microvascular perfusion with compression is offset by increased muscle oxygen extraction: Assessment by contrast-enhanced ultrasound

James R. Broatch et al.

Summary: The study aimed to measure the effects of compression on muscle microvascular blood flow using contrast-enhanced ultrasound in healthy adults following intense exercise for the first time. The results showed that compression decreased muscle microvascular blood volume and attenuated the exercise-induced increase in microvascular velocity and flow.

Muscle strength and endurance in high-level rock climbers

Robert Rokowski et al.

Summary: The study found that higher elite climbers have superior forearm muscle strength and endurance compared to elite/advanced climbers, which are significantly correlated with climbing performance. Intermittent muscle endurance is among the performance factors in difficult rock climbing, but is less important than maintaining high forces during sustained muscle contractions.

Performance Assessment for Rock Climbers: The International Rock Climbing Research Association Sport-Specific Test Battery

Nick Draper et al.

Summary: The study aimed to examine the validity and reliability of a battery of 10 measures designed to assess the key physiological parameters for successful rock climbing performance. Results showed that the flexibility and strength tests were only partially successful in differentiating across climber abilities, while the power and endurance tests performed well with regard to validity and reliability, particularly the finger hang and powerslap tests.

Passive Recovery Strategies after Exercise: A Narrative Literature Review of the Current Evidence

Michael-Flynn L. Cullen et al.

Summary: Passive recovery techniques aim to minimize negative effects of training or competition for athletes, helping them return to peak performance faster. Evidence supports the effectiveness of compression garments, cold water immersion, partial body cryotherapy, hyperbaric oxygen, and vibratory therapies in athlete recovery. However, other popular modalities lack convincing evidence regarding their benefits.
