Gill and Skin Oxygen Uptake, Biochemical, Hematological, and Histological Responses of Eel (Anguilla bicolor bicolor) Exposed to Air

Eko Harianto et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the oxygen uptake of A. bicolor bicolor through gills and skin, and observed the changes in blood biochemistry values, blood image, and histology in response to air exposure. The results showed that the percentage of oxygen uptake through the skin increased while the percentage of oxygen uptake through the gills decreased with longer exposure time.

Gill physiological and transcriptomic response of the threatened freshwater mussel Solenaia oleivora to salinity shift

Ting Zhang et al.

Summary: Solenaia oleivora, an endemic freshwater shellfish in China, is facing threats due to water pollution and overfishing. Studies have shown that increased salinity causes death of S. oleivora, with abnormalities in gills and inhibition of antioxidant and immune functions. This may be a major reason for its low survival rate in high salinity conditions.

Rethinking the Citric Acid Cycle: Connecting Pyruvate Carboxylase and Citrate Synthase to the Flow of Energy and Material

Dirk Roosterman et al.

Summary: The Citric Acid Cycle, initially proposed in 1937 by Sir H. A Krebs, is a unidirectional cycle crucial for the degradation of lactic acid and energy production. The heart lactate dehydrogenase center · proton-linked monocarboxylate transporter 1 complex plays a key role in catalyzing the initial step of the cycle by oxidizing lactate to pyruvate. By incorporating oxaloacetic acid into the cycle, anabolic processes can be integrated, allowing organisms to recover ATP more efficiently.

Bisphenol A induces hepatic triglyceride level in adult male rare minnow Gobiocypris rarus

Kaihang Mi et al.

Summary: The study showed that BPA exposure significantly increased hepatic lipid deposition in male rare minnow, with an increase in triglyceride level and a decrease in diglyceride level. The expression of lipid metabolism related genes indicated that BPA up-regulates TG synthesis related genes expression and down-regulates TG degradation genes expression, disrupting TG transport related genes as well. Overall, the study enriches the understanding of how environmental endocrine disruptors like BPA affect lipid accumulation in fish.

Effects of air exposure at different temperatures in selected breeding lines of Pinctada fucata with different shell color

Haijun Wei et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of different temperatures and air exposure on the survival rate and biochemical indexes of Pinctada fucata. Results showed significant differences in survival rate and biochemical indexes among shell colors and air exposure temperatures, with the black shell color strain showing the highest tolerance. Antioxidant indicators GSH-Px and CAT could serve as test indicators for evaluating the ability of P. fucata to resist air exposure stress.

Effects of air exposure on survival, histological structure, non-specific immunity and gene expression of red claw crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus)

Yao-Peng Lu et al.

Summary: Air exposure during crayfish transport induces pathological changes in hepatopancreas and intestines, and modulates antioxidant and immune status. Prolonged air exposure leads to suppressed antioxidant status, resulting in tissue oxidative damage and eventual death of crayfish.

Environmentally relevant concentrations of oxytetracycline and copper increased liver lipid deposition through inducing oxidative stress and mitochondria dysfunction in grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idella

Yi-Huan Xu et al.

Summary: The study showed that the mixture of Cu and OTC had negative impacts on growth performance and feed utilization of fish, induced oxidative stress and damaged mitochondrial structure and functions. Nrf2 played an important role in regulating oxidative stress and lipid metabolism.

RNA-Seq analysis and WGCNA reveal dynamic molecular responses to air exposure in the hard clam Mercenaria mercenaria

Cong Zhou et al.

Summary: The study conducted RNA sequencing on the hemocytes of hard clams exposed to air for varying durations, revealing the overall and dynamic molecular responses of hard clams to air exposure. The up-regulation of cytochrome P450 1A and 3A, and monocarboxylate transporter family members during air exposure, as well as different dominant molecular processes in response to different durations of air exposure were observed.

Effect of addition of salt on oxidant activity and apoptosis of Coilia nasus juveniles under air exposure stress

Jun Gao et al.

Summary: Air exposure can lead to high mortality, oxidant stress, and apoptosis in Coilia nasus juveniles. However, the addition of salt both before and after air exposure significantly reduces mortality, inhibits oxidant stress, and protects against apoptosis. This study provides evidence that salt supplementation is an effective method to mitigate air exposure stress in C. nasus juveniles.
