Differential alteration of fMRI signal variability in the ascending trigeminal somatosensory and pain modulatory pathways in migraine

Manyoel Lim et al.

Summary: This study revealed that migraine patients exhibit higher blood-oxygen-level-dependent signal variability in specific brain regions, while showing lower variability in others. The abnormality in interictal BOLD signal variability is associated with headache severity and pain sensitivity, and different dynamic functional connectivity characteristics are present in various pathways.

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) for migraine: an fMRI study

Yue Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that after 4 weeks of taVNS treatment, patients in the taVNS group had significantly reduced number of headache days, pain intensity, and migraine attack times. Functional connectivity analysis revealed that taVNS can increase the connectivity between the motor-related thalamic subregion and anterior cingulate cortex/medial prefrontal cortex, and decrease the connectivity between occipital cortex-related thalamic subregion and postcentral gyrus/precuneus.

Altered Dynamic Amplitude of Low-Frequency Fluctuations in Patients With Migraine Without Aura

Summary: The study revealed abnormal brain functional dynamics in patients with migraine, with a negative correlation between pain intensity and dALFF values in the anterior cingulate cortex. Support vector machine successfully distinguished migraine patients from healthy controls with good accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity.

Structural and Functional Brain Changes in Migraine

Sait Ashina et al.

Summary: Individuals with migraine exhibit structural and functional changes in the brain, including white matter abnormalities, silent infarct-like lesions, and volumetric changes. Neuroimaging studies have helped characterize these changes, but limitations such as small sample sizes and poorly defined control groups exist.

Distinct effects of prematurity on MRI metrics of brain functional connectivity, activity, and structure: Univariate and multivariate analyses

Antonio M. Chiarelli et al.

Summary: Premature birth has bidirectional effects on functional connectivity and regional volume, and to a lesser extent on fALFF. The effects of prematurity on functional connectivity are spatially diffuse, mainly within cortical regions, while effects on regional volume and fALFF are more focal, involving subcortical structures. Multivariate analysis is more sensitive in capturing the complex pattern of prematurity effects.

Evidence of Potential Mechanisms of Acupuncture from Functional MRI Data for Migraine Prophylaxis

Ching-Mao Chang et al.

Summary: Neuroimaging studies show that verum acupuncture for migraine prophylaxis may work differently than sham acupuncture, affecting brain network connectivity and areas related to the pain matrix. However, the exact mechanism of action remains unclear and further research is needed to explore the specific effects of acupuncture.

Summary: This study found that transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) at different frequencies has different modulation effects on the descending pain modulation system, demonstrating the significant role of stimulation frequency in taVNS treatment.

Direct and Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Treatment of Tinnitus: A Scoping Review

Natalia Yakunina et al.

Summary: Recent animal research has shown that VNS paired with sound stimuli can eliminate tinnitus in noise-exposed rats, which led to clinical trials exploring the effectiveness of VNS for alleviating tinnitus in humans. Transcutaneous VNS has gained attention as a non-invasive alternative for tinnitus treatment, with studies also investigating its potential efficacy when used alone without sound stimuli.
