Interleukine-17 Modulates Neurogenesis and Behavior Following Exposure to Trauma in Mice

Yehoshua Willinger et al.

Summary: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with impaired hippocampal neurogenesis and deficits in cognitive and social skills. Lowering the levels of interleukin-17A (IL-17A) may increase neurogenesis and alleviate symptoms in a murine model of PTSD. However, neutralizing IL-17A with an antibody resulted in increased serum levels of IL-17A and impaired neurogenesis. Conversely, targeting interleukin-23 (IL-23) increased neurogenesis.

Interleukin-17 induced by cumulative mild stress promoted depression-like behaviors in young adult mice

Jinho Kim et al.

Summary: The study revealed that CPMS mice exposed to cumulative mild stress during early life exhibited more long-lasting anxiety and depression-like behaviors in young adulthood, with IL-17 upregulation contributing to the development of depressive symptoms. By mimicking early life adversities, this research provides an experimental model for young adult depression and suggests IL-17 as a crucial therapeutic target for depression in young adults.

Temporal Lobe Epilepsy and Psychiatric Comorbidity

Valerio Vinti et al.

Summary: Temporal lobe epilepsy is commonly categorized into mesial and lateral types, with hallmark features including aura, unconsciousness, and automatisms for mesial type, and less evident psychomotor arrest, frequent clones and dystonic postures for the lateral type. The most frequent cause of TLE is hippocampal sclerosis, often associated with psychiatric comorbidities such as anxiety, depression, and interictal dysphoria. These comorbidities, combined with cognitive, learning, and behavioral impairments, are more common in TLE with hippocampal sclerosis and pharmacoresistance. Early detection and proper management of psychiatric comorbidities could greatly improve the quality of life for patients with TLE.

Truncated Neogenin Promotes Hippocampal Neuronal Death after Acute Seizure

In-Young Choi et al.

Summary: During seizure-induced hippocampal necroptosis, an increase in truncated neogenin levels and a decrease in full-length neogenin levels were observed, along with an upregulation of phosphorylation of mixed lineage kinase domain-like pseudokinase. Treatment with DAPT can prevent neogenin truncation and protect neurons from NMDA-induced death.

IL-17 triggers the onset of cognitive and synaptic deficits in early stages of Alzheimer's disease

Helena C. Brigas et al.

Summary: The study found that in Alzheimer's disease models, there is an accumulation of interleukin 17-producing cells in the brain and meninges of female mice, which is associated with cognitive decline. Additionally, neutralization of interleukin 17 can prevent early memory and synaptic plasticity deficits, suggesting an early involvement of interleukin 17 in Alzheimer's disease pathology.
