Decreasing Postamputation Pain with the Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface (RPNI)

Carrie A. Kubiak et al.

Summary: Over 185,000 limb amputations are performed in the United States annually, with many caused by peripheral vascular disease. Existing treatments for symptomatic neuromas have high recurrence rates and lack an ability to interface with myoelectric prosthetic devices. The development of the Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface (RPNI) overcomes these limitations and successfully treats and prevents neuroma formation.

Utilization of Techniques for Upper Extremity Amputation Neuroma Treatment and Prevention

Scott N. Loewenstein et al.

Summary: This study investigated the current utilization of surgical approaches for nerve ending management in upper extremity amputation. The survey results showed that traction neurectomy and burying nerves into muscle were the most commonly used techniques. The application of targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) and regenerative peripheral nerve interfaces (RPNI) differed based on years of practice. TMR and RPNI were commonly used to improve prosthetic control, pain, and phantom limb symptoms. Physician compensation was also a factor affecting the usage of these techniques.

Myelin-associated glycoprotein combined with chitin conduit inhibits painful neuroma formation after sciatic nerve transection

Wei Pi et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that combined treatment with myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG) and chitin conduit can effectively inhibit the formation of painful neuroma after sciatic nerve transection and alleviate neuropathic pain. The combined treatment reduces autotomy behaviors, decreases the expression of pain markers, reduces the density of regenerated axons, and alters the ratio of myelinated to unmyelinated axons.

The Muscle Cuff Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface for the Amplification of Intact Peripheral Nerve Signals

Shelby R. Svientek et al.

Summary: Robotic exoskeletons are seen as a promising modality for functional restoration in rehabilitative medicine. However, their use is limited due to unreliable motor detection methods. Peripheral nerve interfaces are a potential solution, but their small amplitudes and susceptibility to background noise decrease their accuracy. The Muscle Cuff Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface (MC-RPNI) is designed to overcome these limitations and amplify motor signals for high accuracy detection, potentially enabling reliable utilization of exoskeleton devices.
