Conversion of aqueous ethanol/acetaldehyde mixtures into 1,3-butadiene over a mesostructured Ta-SBA-15 catalyst: Effect of reaction conditions and kinetic modelling

G. M. Cabello Gonzalez et al.

Summary: This paper investigates key issues in the design of industrial ethanol to 1,3-butadiene two-step processes, with a focus on the performance of Ta-SBA-15 catalyst under different operating conditions and the influence of water on catalyst stability. The results reveal complex interacting effects between reaction conditions and emphasize the importance of careful selection to optimize catalyst performance.

The effect of lanthanum in Cu/La(-Zr)-Si oxide catalysts for aqueous ethanol conversion into 1,3-butadiene

Pavlo Kyriienko et al.

Summary: This paper presents the investigation of different component oxide systems in aqueous ethanol conversion into 1,3-butadiene, with a focus on the effect of lanthanum in the catalyst composition. The results show that high selectivity of 1,3-butadiene is achieved during the conversion of rectified and aqueous ethanol over the studied catalysts. The activity of the catalysts depends on the order of introducing the components, which determines the acid-base characteristics of the surface. The addition of lanthanum into Cu/Zr-Si catalysts increases their activity by forming lanthanum containing base sites that are tolerant to water. The differences in the interaction of reaction intermediates with surface Zr and La-containing sites are revealed, and the effect of water on the adsorption of carbon coke, ethoxy species, and acetaldehyde over the catalyst surface is demonstrated.

Insights into the mechanism of ethanol conversion into 1,3-butadiene on Zr-β zeolite

Minhua Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the structural properties of open and closed sites on Zr-beta zeolite and the mechanism of ETB reaction were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results showed that Zr-OH participation in the proton transfer step at open site reduced the energy barrier, making the Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) reaction the rate-limiting step at open site. The number of Zr-beta open sites was positively correlated with catalytic performance.

Calcium Phosphate Catalysts for Ethanol Coupling to Butanol and Butadiene

J. Tyler Prillaman et al.

Summary: The study investigated the catalytic conversion of ethanol to butanol and butadiene using calcium phosphate materials pretreated at different temperatures. Low temperature pretreatment resulted in high selectivity for acid-catalyzed products, while high temperature pretreatment led to the formation of coupling products.

Deactivation of a Y-zeolite based catalyst with coke evolution during the catalytic pyrolysis of polyethylene for fuel oil

Zezhou Chen et al.

Summary: The study reveals that coke evolution in the catalytic pyrolysis of polyethylene leads to accumulation of coke quantity and structural condensation, resulting in catalyst deactivation and decrease of oil yields but increase of wax yields and heavy oil concentration.

Protective desilication of beta zeolite: A mechanism study and its application in ethanol-acetaldehyde to 1,3-butadiene

Minhua Zhang et al.

Summary: Hierarchical beta zeolite was prepared through protective desilication with quaternary ammonium hydroxide, and Zr-beta zeolite was prepared using the hierarchical beta zeolite. The mesoporosity of beta zeolite was successfully tuned by adjusting the length of TAAOH alkyl chain, leading to enhanced catalytic activity of Zr-beta zeolite.

1,3-Butadiene production from aqueous ethanol over ZnO/MgO-SiO2 catalysts: Insight into H2O effect on catalytic performance

Pavlo Kyriienko et al.

Summary: A series of ZnO/MgO-SiO2 systems with different MgO:SiO2 ratios were studied for their catalytic performance in 1,3-butadiene production, showing that water presence can decrease C-C coupling products but hydrated sites remain active in the reaction. High 1,3-butadiene selectivity was achieved with MgO:SiO2 ratios of (1:1) and (3:1) in the catalysts.
