Design and performance evaluation of a photocatalytic reactor for indoor air disinfection

Silvia Mercedes Zacarias et al.

Summary: A photocatalytic device for removing airborne microorganisms was developed and tested in this study, showing complete removal of high loads of microorganisms in the air stream in just 1 hour. However, longer irradiation periods were required for inactivating retained bacteria in the reactor bed. Efficiency parameters were calculated to evaluate the influence of irradiation conditions on photocatalytic inactivation of bacteria attached to the coated rings.

Design and Testing of Mobile Laboratory for Mitigation of Gaseous Emissions from Livestock Agriculture with Photocatalysis

Myeongseong Lee et al.

Summary: Livestock production systems generate nuisance odor and gaseous emissions that affect local communities and regional air quality, as well as pose concerns for the health and safety of farmworkers. Mitigation technologies that are economically feasible for animal farming are needed. The study presented the design, testing, and commissioning of a mobile laboratory for research and performance demonstration in simulated farm conditions before on-farm testing. The mobile lab utilizes titanium dioxide, TiO2-based photocatalysis, and adjustable UV-A dose for treating air, demonstrating effectiveness in reduction of ammonia (NH3) and butan-1-ol emissions.

A critical review of advancement in scientific research on food animal welfare-related air pollution

Ji-Qin Ni et al.

Summary: This paper reviewed scientific research advancements in food animal welfare-related air pollution over the past nine decades. The studies have shown that air pollution is closely related to the health and safety of food animals, with research primarily conducted in the United States, United Kingdom, and China. Experimental studies were mainly conducted in laboratory conditions, focusing on pollutants such as ammonia and dust. Observational studies identified air toxicity causing animal death or injury, and there is a need to address the decreasing research activities in North America and Europe.

Mitigation of Odor and Gaseous Emissions from Swine Barn with UV-A and UV-C Photocatalysis

Myeongseong Lee et al.

Summary: UV-A photocatalysis effectively reduces odor and air pollutants in the livestock environment, significantly mitigating targeted gases emissions with a less significant effect on particulate matter. The treatment changes the overall odor character of emissions and may be useful for larger farm-scale trials.

Evaluation of TiO2 Based Photocatalytic Treatment of Odor and Gaseous Emissions from Swine Manure with UV-A and UV-C

Myeongseong Lee et al.

Summary: Poor indoor air quality and gaseous emissions are unwanted consequences of livestock and poultry production, negatively impacting rural communities, the environment, and climate. This study investigated the use of ultraviolet (UV) light treatment to mitigate odors and air pollutants from stored swine manure on a pilot-scale. The results indicated that UV technology effectively reduced odorous gases and could be applied to improve air quality in livestock barns, contributing to industry sustainability.
