Lower circulating neuron-specific enolase concentrations in adults and adolescents with severe mental illness

Dimitrios Andreou et al.

Summary: The study found lower levels of NSE in adult and adolescent patients with SMI compared to healthy controls. Among adults, both patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders and bipolar spectrum disorders had lower NSE levels, which were associated with increased symptom severity. Females also had lower NSE concentrations than males, suggesting a potential role of gender in the pathogenesis of SMI.

Reserve and Maintenance in the Aging Brain: A Longitudinal Study of Healthy Older Adults

Epifanio Bagarinao et al.

Summary: The aging brain undergoes structural changes even in healthy individuals. Quantifying these changes can help distinguish between pathological changes and those associated with normal aging. Different brain regions are affected differently during the aging process, with some regions showing longitudinal decline and others mainly affected by cross-sectional changes.
