Mitochondrial genes from 18 angiosperms fill sampling gaps for phylogenomic inferences of the early diversification of flowering plants

Jia-Yu Xue et al.

Summary: The early diversification of angiosperms was a rapid process, leading to conflicting hypotheses regarding overall angiosperm phylogeny. Studies of mitochondrial genomes filled taxon-sampling gaps in various angiosperm lineages and provided additional evidence for exploring the early evolution and diversification of angiosperms. Despite conflicting phylogenies, there was congruence regarding deep relationships of several major angiosperm lineages, with third codon positions of mitochondrial genes producing better resolved phylogenetic relationships.

Refined Interpretation of the Pistillate Flower in Ceratophyllum Sheds Fresh Light on Gynoecium Evolution in Angiosperms

Dmitry D. Sokoloff et al.

Summary: Molecular phylogenetic analyses have revealed a superclade of mesangiosperms, including Ceratophyllum and Chloranthaceae. The interpretation of gynoecium type in Ceratophyllum is controversial. This study investigates the variation in gynoecium morphology and evolution in three Ceratophyllum species. The results suggest that the gynoecium of Ceratophyllum does not strongly support its interpretation as an apocarpous demand.

Chloranthus genome provides insights into the early diversification of angiosperms

Xing Guo et al.

Summary: Chloranthales are the last major mesangiosperm lineage without a nuclear genome assembly, but a high-quality genome assembly of Chloranthus spicatus has now been achieved, providing insights into the evolutionary relationships and genome evolution of mesangiosperms. This study sheds light on the unique characteristics of Chloranthales and magnoliids compared to other angiosperms, and contributes to a better understanding of angiosperm diversification and phylogeny.

Fassettia, a new North American genus of family Ceratophyllaceae: evidence based on cladistic analyses of current molecular data of Ceratophyllum

Evgeny Mavrodiev et al.

Summary: This study re-analysed a molecular dataset of the genus Ceratophyllum based on ITS and matK sequences within a cladistic framework, resolving sister group relationships by rooting trees. Ceratophyllum echinatum was identified as sister to all other taxa of the genus, leading to its transfer to a new genus Fassettia. Further investigation is needed to determine the exact taxonomic circumscription of Fassettia.

Evidence on vegetative and inflorescence morphology of Chloranthaceae (Angiospermae) from the Early Cretaceous (middle-late Albian) of Spain

Luis Miguel Sender et al.

Summary: This study presents fossil impressions of leaves, stems, and inflorescences from the mid-late Albian Escucha Formation in NE Spain, shedding light on the morphological and systematic diversity of the Chloranthaceae family in the early Cretaceous. The discovery of two new genera and species along with the first organic connection of fossil leaves, stems, and inflorescences of Chloranthaceae provide direct evidence of the vegetation and flower morphology in the Early Cretaceous. The analysis also suggests potential relationships between the fossils and living genera within Chloranthaceae.
