Association between Objectively Measured Neighbourhood Built Environment and Walkability

Sabeen Qureshi et al.

Summary: Previous studies have shown that subjective measures are commonly used by urban planners and urban designers in Malaysia to assess built environment attributes and neighborhood walkability. However, these studies only focus on one or two objective measures of the built environment. This paper aims to explore the objective measures of multiple built environment attributes that influence walkability. Using data from the Putrajaya master plan, geographical information system, and pedometer, this study conducted a case study on three residential precincts in Putrajaya and collected data from 134 randomly selected respondents in each precinct. The results indicate that the overall indices values of Precinct 18 are higher compared to precincts 9 and 8, and the daily distance measured by pedometer is also higher in Precinct 18. The findings suggest that urban designers and urban planners can employ these objective methods to assess walkability and built environment attributes.

Campus Shuttle Bus Route Optimization Using Machine Learning Predictive Analysis: A Case Study

Rafidah Md Noor et al.

Summary: Public transportation is essential for communities to carry out daily activities, with buses being a commonly used mass transportation method. The smart transportation concept combines technology and strategy, with smart ideas being crucial for IoT applications. This study utilizes Artificial Neural Network and Support Vector Machine algorithms to predict travel time for university shuttle buses, outperforming SVM. Recommendations for suitable routes are provided, with future directions for the field discussed.

A Planning Method for Partially Grid-Connected Bus Rapid Transit Systems Operating with In-Motion Charging Batteries

Andres E. Diez et al.

Summary: This paper introduces an electrical infrastructure planning method for transit systems with partially grid-connected vehicles, with a focus on minimizing battery installation and achieving minimum Medium Voltage network requirements. The method was tested on a BRT route in Medellin, Colombia, and proved to be useful for finding a minimum feasible cost solution for partially electrifying the transit line.

Using Random Undersampling Boosting Classifier to Estimate Mode Shift Response to Bus Local Network Expansion and Bus Rapid Transit Services

Qing Li et al.

Summary: This study proposed a machine learning-based classification method to accurately predict mode choice in response to potential strategies for transit promotion. Results show that bus rapid transit can significantly increase transit mode share, and walking distance to the nearest transit access is linearly associated with the mode shift to transit.

Mode Choice Modeling to Shift Car Travelers towards Park and Ride Service in the City Centre of Karachi

Irfan Ahmed Memon et al.

Summary: The successful implementation of a park and ride service in Karachi's central business district has alleviated traffic congestion, with mode choice models indicating that over 70% of motorbike users are willing to adopt the service to avoid mental stress and protect the environment. Conducting a travel behavior survey is crucial to understanding traveler behavior and encouraging the shift towards sustainable public transportation options.

Investigating users ? travel behaviours and perceptions of single-corridor BRT: Lessons from Lahore

Bilal Zia Malik et al.

Summary: Despite the growing popularity of BRT systems worldwide, limited empirical evidence exists in rapidly urbanizing developing countries regarding corridor-wide users' typical travel characteristics and perceptions of system attributes. The study revealed differences in travel characteristics of BRT users for various demographics, reflected correlations among service quality attributes, and ranked satisfaction levels regarding service attributes.

Cost, reliability, convenience, equity or image? The cases for and against the introduction of light rail and bus rapid transit in inners suburban Adelaide, South Australia

Michael McGreevy

Summary: The inner and middle suburbs of Adelaide South Australia have low levels of public transport use and high levels of private motor vehicle use, mainly due to the absence of a rapid transit system. The government plans to reintroduce light rail in these suburbs to enhance the city's image and promote urban infill. Research suggests that adopting a "Curitiba" styled bus rapid transit is the best option, as it is cost-effective, can cater to more residents, and provide a reliable and convenient service.
