Comparing biofuels through the lens of sustainability: A data envelopment analysis approach

Richard Cabrera-Jimenez et al.

Summary: This article analyzes the performance of 72 different biofuels routes based on 12 indicators covering the economic, environmental, and social dimensions. Results show that renewable diesel is a better option than ethanol-based blends or biodiesel, and waste biomass is preferred over cellulosic biomass or bio-oils. The selection of the carbon source is the most important decision and regional factors related to soil and climate should be considered.

SWAT model application for evaluating agricultural conservation practice effectiveness in reducing phosphorous loss from the Western Lake Erie Basin

Yongping Yuan et al.

Summary: The SWAT model has been used to assess the effectiveness of agricultural conservation practices in reducing nutrient loading in Lake Erie. While the model performed well for streamflow and sediment, it showed unsatisfactory results for phosphorus loading. Future model applications should focus on improving phosphorus transport and transformation processes to provide more accurate assessments of agricultural conservation practices.

Distribution Characteristics and Risk Assessment of Agricultural Land Use Non-Point Source Pollution in Typical Biofuel Ethanol Planting Areas

Guannan Cui et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of speeding up the promotion and application of bio-fuel ethanol as a national strategy in China on the raw material planting structure. The results showed that the maize planting area faced significant nitrogen and phosphorus pollution, while the cassava planting area was more suitable for fuel ethanol development. Furthermore, this study provided scientific support for assessing the impact of the Chinese national fuel ethanol policy on the water environment of the raw material planting area.

The Role of Bioeconomy in the Future Energy Scenario: A State-of-the-Art Review

Martina Perisic et al.

Summary: The bioeconomy aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, prevent climate change, eliminate insecurity, and efficiently use resources. However, there is fierce controversy over the pathways to achieve these goals. This paper promotes a dialogue on whether a biomass-based economy can be more sustainable than existing economies and discusses the crucial issues and conflicting points in the ongoing debate. The paper also explores the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on previous scenarios and recommends a diverse strategy for shaping the bioeconomy and funding renewable energy sources.

Assessment of Variations in Runoff Due to Landcover Changes Using the SWAT Model in an Urban River in Dublin, Ireland

Arunima Sarkar Basu et al.

Summary: Investigating the impact of land cover change in hydrological modelling is crucial for water resources management. This study explores the importance of land cover change in the development of SWAT, a physically-based hydrological model. Using five land cover maps from different years, the SWAT model was used to simulate runoff in the Dodder River basin from 1993 to 2019. The results suggest that using land cover data that closely matches the simulation time period improves the accuracy of the SWAT model. The study highlights the necessity of considering dynamic and time-varying land cover data for runoff simulation.

Effects of different cropping systems on ammonia nitrogen load in a typical agricultural watershed of South China

Jie Jiang et al.

Summary: The excessive application of agricultural irrigation water and chemical fertilizer has led to non-point source pollution, which needs to be addressed for sustainable development. This study focused on the effects of different cropping systems on NH3-N pollution in the DRB and proposed a critical threshold for NH3-N emission. The findings suggest that crop rotation can reduce NH3-N load, and planting sequence affects NH3-N load to some extent.

A review of domestic land use change attributable to US biofuel policy

K. G. Austin et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that for each billion-gallon increase in biofuels, there is a range of 0.01-2.45 million acres of net cropland expansion. Empirical approaches estimating national-scale estimates fall within the range of 0.38-0.66 million acres per billion-gallon increase. The study suggests that empirical studies have a smaller range of estimates and are closer to partial equilibrium approaches.

Mechanism of Response of Watershed Water Quality to Agriculture Land-Use Changes in a Typical Fuel Ethanol Raw Material Planting Area-A Case Study on Guangxi Province, China

Guannan Cui et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of agricultural land-use changes in a cassava fuel ethanol planting area on water quality, revealing that different land-use types have different effects on nitrogen and phosphorus load. The research findings also provide scientific support for achieving the carbon neutralization vision and set a good example for the development of the cassava fuel ethanol industry in other cassava-planting countries.

Heavy Metal(loid)s Pollution of Agricultural Soils and Health Risk Assessment of Consuming Soybean and Wheat in a Typical Non-Ferrous Metal Mine Area in Northeast China

Dexian Li et al.

Summary: Comprehensive investigations of the distribution and health risks of metal(loid)s in the environment near mines are important. This study examined the levels of various metal(loid)s in soils and crops in a non-ferrous metal mine area in Northeast China. The results showed that mining activities significantly affected the levels of certain metal(loid)s in soils, and these elements mainly came from the mines. The bioconcentration factor values were different for essential and non-essential elements, with essential elements showing higher values. The levels of certain metal(loid)s in some soil samples exceeded the unpolluted level, indicating pollution. The hazard quotient and hazard index values for certain metal(loid)s in the crops indicated potential health risks for all people groups.

Hydrological simulation of the Jialing River Basin using the MIKE SHE model in changing climate

Jing Zhang et al.

Summary: The study illustrates the significant impact of climate change and human activities on the water cycle process in the Jialing River Basin. The MIKE SHE model shows applicability in simulating the runoff process, and hydropower stations are found to have a regulating effect on the basin's runoff. Future scenarios suggest that the Jialing River Basin will become colder and drier, with the RCP4.5 scenario showing more consistency with the predicted changes.
