Resource, Collaborator, or Individual Cow? Applying Q Methodology to Investigate Austrian Farmers' Viewpoints on Motivational Aspects of Improving Animal Welfare

Lorenz Maurer et al.

Summary: The study identified four different viewpoints among Austrian dairy farmers regarding the improvement of dairy cow health and welfare, with some farmers motivated by economic factors, others focusing on animal welfare and public image, some seeking to balance economic and ethical considerations, and others treating cows as equal collaborators deserving of respect and appreciation. Using Q methodology, high resolution images of different farmer typologies were drawn, enabling tailored intervention strategies to be developed by advisors.

Environmental Sustainability Assessment of Pig Farms in Selected European Countries: Combining LCA and Key Performance Indicators for Biodiversity Assessment

Antonia Katharina Ruckli et al.

Summary: This study aimed to combine Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) with a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) assessment to examine the environmental impacts of different pig farm types in Europe. Results showed no relationship between LCA outcomes and biodiversity scores, with variations more significant within farm types than across them. Certain farm management characteristics correlated with LCA results, while biodiversity performance depended on KPIs related to ecological focus areas, fertiliser management, and GMO crops.

Developing a Methodology for Aggregated Assessment of the Economic Sustainability of Pig Farms

Agata Malak-Rawlikowska et al.

Summary: This study proposes and tests a new assessment and aggregation method that provides a broader view on the long-term aspects of economic sustainability of pig farms. Results show that closed-cycle farms have advantages in terms of raising healthy animals and overall resilience of resources, while specialized breeding and finishing farms appear to be more sustainable in areas like profitability, risk management, and reproductive efficiency.
