An eco-friendly closed-loop supply chain facing demand and carbon price uncertainty

Summary: In this research, a two-stage stochastic model is proposed to design a closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) under a carbon trading scheme in the multi-period planning context. The model considers uncertain demands and carbon prices and provides a solution procedure with scenario reduction for efficient solving. The application of the model in the aluminum industry shows that it generates a network with capacity redundancy to cope with varying customer demands and carbon prices, with only a slight increase in cost and emissions compared to the deterministic model. Using scenario reduction, the model solves with reduced scenarios while maintaining similar network configuration and a decrease in computational burden.

Research on remanufacturing closed loop supply chain based on incentive-compatibility theory under uncertainty

Summary: Based on incentive-compatibility theory, a total cost model considering carbon taxes and subsidies is constructed for a remanufacturing closed-loop supply chain system. The model also takes into account uncertain market demand and recycled products quality. The study proposes a fuzzy opportunity constraint programming method to address the uncertainty factors. The meta-heuristics methods, Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), are utilized to find and compare the approximate optimal solution for a calculating example. The results show that the system cost is influenced by different combinations of market demand and recycled products quality. The carbon tax policy set by the government can reduce enterprise carbon emissions, but the increase in cost significantly affects the willingness of enterprises to reduce carbon emissions. Therefore, incentives such as subsidies are necessary. There exists an optimal incentive-compatibility combination that can achieve optimal cost reduction and carbon emissions reduction in the closed-loop supply chain system.

The findings suggest that the carbon tax policy is effective for the supply chain with CSR activities, while the subsidy policy is effective for the supply chain without CSR activities. Selecting low-cost methods for implementing CSR by the retailer can help eliminate profit conflicts among supply chain members. The government should consider the decision-making thresholds of supply chain members to ensure maximum policy effectiveness.
