Establishing management zones of soil sulfur and micronutrients for sustainable crop production

Summary: The study identified deficiencies of sulfur and micronutrients in the agricultural soils of the Narmada River basin in India, and created soil management zones to prioritize nutrient supply and adopt zone-specific soil nutrient management strategies for achieving sustainable crop production. The analysis of geo-referenced soil samples revealed significant correlations among soil parameters and spatial dependence, with variations in nutrient concentrations across the area. Through principal component analysis and fuzzy c-means clustering, five distinct soil management zones were identified for efficient nutrient management.

Summary: A novel approach is proposed to manage site-specific nitrogen fertilization in durum wheat by integrating proximal sensing, seasonal weather forecasts, and crop modeling. This approach successfully reduces the amount of nitrogen supplied, improves crop nitrogen use efficiency, and decreases spatial variability in yield and protein content. Further improvements in model performance are necessary.
