Centennial changes in heat waves characteristics in Athens (Greece) from multiple definitions based on climatic and bioclimatic indices

Dimitra Founda et al.

Summary: Heat waves have significant impacts on society and the environment. This study investigates the long-term statistics and trends in heat wave characteristics in the eastern Mediterranean and introduces new definitions. The results show deviations between different definitions, but regardless of the definition, there is a significant increase in the number and frequency of heat wave events in the area.

Excess Heat Factor climatology, trends, and exposure across European Functional Urban Areas

Ana Oliveira et al.

Summary: In Europe, it is urgent to adapt to extreme weather events due to climate change. The adoption of a European heatwave (HW) early-warning index is still not widely agreed upon. The Excess Heat Factor (EHF) is shown to accurately predict heat-related human health outcomes in mid-latitude climates. Historical and trend analysis of EHF-based HW detection shows a greater exposure in the southern European Mediterranean region and higher EHF intensities in the northern and high altitude regions.

Climate Change and Weather Extremes in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East

G. Zittis et al.

Summary: Observation-based and modeling studies have identified the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East region as a prominent climate change hotspot. The region's greenhouse gas emissions are rapidly increasing, leading to faster warming compared to other inhabited regions. Projected future trends include continued warming and an increase in extreme weather events. The region's vulnerability to climate change highlights the importance of adaptation and resilience strategies for sectors at risk.

The Mediterranean climate change hotspot in the CMIP5 and CMIP6 projections

Josep Cos et al.

Summary: This study compares multiple models' projections of future climate change in the Mediterranean region, and finds that the region will face ongoing warming and declining precipitation. The temperature changes are more certain, with the strongest warming occurring in the summer. The changes in precipitation are more uncertain, but significant declines are projected in the summer.

The 2020 Siberian heat wave

James E. Overland et al.

Summary: In 2020, Siberia experienced an extreme heat wave with anomalies in monthly temperatures, largely due to the stratospheric polar vortex and tropospheric jet stream. The Arctic Oscillation set extreme positive records, contributing to the persistent heat wave. High tropospheric geopotential heights over Asia influenced temperatures in May and June.

Urbanization Amplifies Nighttime Heat Stress on Warmer Days Over the US

Chandan Sarangi et al.

Summary: The impact of heat on human health, particularly in urban areas, is significant. Urban heat stress intensity is affected by various factors such as urban heat island, urban-induced change in moisture, and background temperature. Research shows that diurnal variations in heat stress intensity are mainly influenced by urban heat island dynamics, with nighttime discomfort exacerbated by intensified urban-induced effects.

Causes of the Record-Breaking Pacific Northwest Heatwave, Late June 2021

James E. Overland

Summary: The extreme heat event that hit the Pacific Northwest in late June 2021 caused hundreds of deaths, loss of marine life, and forests. The event was triggered by the split of the polar vortex in the Arctic, accompanied by warming, which may represent a critical state in large-scale atmospheric circulation variability.
