A systematized review of the use of mobile technology in outdoor learning

Imre van Kraalingen

Summary: This inquiry reviews recent studies on the use of mobile technology in outdoor learning and presents findings on the associated affordances. The global implementation of mobile technologies in education has added complexity to the field and requires a better understanding. The review aims to summarize and critically evaluate peer-reviewed studies while identifying gaps in current research. The 33 articles reviewed reflect the dualistic nature of the field, with some highlighting the opportunities presented by portability and accessibility of mobile devices, while others point out challenges such as complexity, safety concerns, and loss of experiential quality. The review identifies three principal strategies - mitigation, intentionality, and adaptation - to effectively integrate mobile technology in outdoor learning programs and overcome the dichotomy between nature and technology.

Inquiry-based mobile learning in secondary school science education: A systematic review

Caihua Liu et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on inquiry-based learning in science education, with mobile technologies seen as valuable tools to support this approach. However, there is still a lack of understanding of mobile technology-supported inquiry-based learning in secondary science education. More evidence-based and nuanced insights are needed to explore how using mobile technologies can enhance student engagement with various levels of inquiry and improve their science learning.
