Economic impacts and carbon emissions of electric vehicles roll-out towards 2025 goal of China: An integrated input-output and computable general equilibrium study

Zhiwei Guo et al.

Summary: The rapid expansion of China's vehicle fleet puts pressure on efforts to reduce carbon emissions. However, concerns have been raised about the environmental impact of electric vehicles (EVs) during the production phase. A study using a computational model found that the increase in EV sales has a negligible impact on the overall economy and the difference in CO2 emissions between EVs and internal combustion engine vehicles is marginal. Therefore, large-scale adoption of EVs will not hinder the sustainable development of the automotive industry.

Total CO2-equivalent life-cycle emissions from commercially available passenger cars

Johannes Buberger et al.

Summary: This paper compares the total life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions of commercially available passenger cars with different powertrains and energy sources. The results show that conventional gasoline and diesel vehicles emit the highest amount of emissions, while vehicles powered by green electricity, biogas, and fuel cells can significantly reduce emissions.

Decarbonising transport in Europe: Trends, goals, policies and passenger car scenarios

Romeo Danielis et al.

Summary: The paper provides a summary of the progress made towards transport decarbonisation in Europe and identifies future developments for the 2020-2030 decade. Member States rely on two strategies: increasing the production and use of biofuels and supporting the diffusion of electric vehicles. The analysis estimates that a combination of these strategies could significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Have electric vehicles effectively addressed CO2 emissions? Analysis of eight leading countries using quantile-on-quantile regression approach

Bingjie Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamics between electric vehicle stock and CO2 emissions in eight leading countries, finding that electric vehicles have a negative impact on CO2 emissions while CO2 emissions weakly and positively affect electric vehicles. There is heterogeneity among the countries in the nexus between electric vehicles and CO2 emissions, with mixed directionality of causality between them.

Environmental and economic impact of electric vehicle adoption in the U.S

Zhenhua Chen et al.

Summary: BEV adoption has a relatively low impact on GDP growth, but subsidies have a significant effect on GDP and BEV adoption due to their stimulus effect on household expenditures and vehicle-manufacturing-related sectors. Productivity shocks have a moderate impact on GDP and only affect BEV adoption in competitive markets. The environmental impact is more complex, as while BEV adoption leads to reduced tailpipe emissions, increased manufacturing activity can offset these savings with non-tailpipe emissions growth. Promoting BEV adoption through subsidies should be accompanied by green manufacturing and power generation initiatives to achieve desired emissions reductions.

Dynamic simulation and life cycle greenhouse gas impact assessment of CNG, LNG, and diesel-powered transit buses in British Columbia, Canada

Ali Pourahmadiyan et al.

Summary: This study developed a regional life cycle assessment framework to evaluate CNG and LNG as fuel alternatives for transit buses in Victoria, Canada. Results showed switching from diesel to CNG or LNG can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 4.8% and 8.1% respectively, with the majority of emissions associated with on-board emissions.

How the uptake of electric vehicles in China leads to emissions transfer: An Analysis from the perspective of inter-provincial electricity trading

Wenbo Li et al.

Summary: This study used a QuasiInput-Output model to analyze the transferred emissions caused by the electricity consumption of EVs in China. The results showed that transferred emissions mainly occurred from developed regions in eastern China to less developed regions in the midwest. Interregional electricity trading is conducive to improving the national environmental benefits of EV promotion.

Life cycle assessment of mid-range passenger cars powered by liquid and gaseous biofuels: Comparison with greenhouse gas emissions of electric vehicles and forecast to 2030

Cyprien Ternel et al.

Summary: Electrification of the transport sector is an effective measure to reduce carbon emissions, but other low-carbon solutions should be considered. Life cycle assessment shows that conventional engines powered with biofuels complement electrified powertrains, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles appear to be an ideal solution.
