Potential probiotics and postbiotic characteristics including immunomodulatory effects of lactic acid bacteria isolated from traditional yogurt-like products

Mohammed Tarique et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from traditional yogurt-like products in terms of their probiotic and postbiotic characteristics. The LAB isolates showed resistance to gastrointestinal conditions, physiological properties, and the production of desirable substances. Additionally, two of the LAB isolates exhibited immunomodulatory activities.

The Emulsifier Carboxymethylcellulose Induces More Aggressive Colitis in Humanized Mice with Inflammatory Bowel Disease Microbiota Than Polysorbate-80

Esmat Rousta et al.

Summary: The study found that commonly used synthetic dietary emulsifiers have different effects on intestinal inflammation: CMC exacerbates inflammation, while P80 affects specific microbiota populations.

Direct impact of commonly used dietary emulsifiers on human gut microbiota

Sabrine Naimi et al.

Summary: The study found that many commonly used emulsifiers can directly alter the gut microbiota in a way that promotes intestinal inflammation. While some emulsifiers had similar impacts on the microbiota, others, such as lecithin, did not significantly affect the microbiota in the model. Various carrageenans and gums were found to have particularly detrimental impacts on microbiota density, composition, and expression of pro-inflammatory molecules.

In Vitro Bile Salt Hydrolase (BSH) Activity Screening of Different Probiotic Microorganisms

Jimmy G. Hernandez-Gomez et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the BSH activity in six probiotic strains, including five lactic acid bacteria and one probiotic yeast. Results showed that Lactobacillus plantarum DGIA1 and Saccharomyces boulardii exhibited excellent deconjugation activities against bile acids, with the yeast showing BSH activity for the first time. This finding highlights the potential of these probiotic strains in regulating cholesterol levels.

Cholesterol-to-Coprostanol Conversion by the Gut Microbiota: What We Know, Suspect, and Ignore

Catherine Juste et al.

Summary: Cholesterol in the colon is metabolized by bacteria into coprostanol, with variable conversion rates in human populations. Two major conversion pathways have been proposed, but there is still much unknown in this field.
