Label-free biosensor of phagocytosis for diagnosing bacterial infections

Junchen Liao et al.

Summary: Current methods for detecting phagocytosis pose significant challenges, necessitating the development of a rapid, non-disruptive, and label-free detection approach. By using deformability assays and microscopic imaging, it was demonstrated that phagocytic blood cells with internalized bacteria exhibit aberrant physical properties, which were leveraged to develop a novel microfluidics-based biosensor platform for phagocytosis detection. This platform showed promising clinical utility in rapidly diagnosing microbial infections, especially in bloodstream infections, ultimately improving point-of-care management outcomes.

Bacteria and cancer cell pearl chain under dielectrophoresis

Tian Fook Kong et al.

Summary: The study focuses on observing and studying the formation of pearl chains by bacteria and cancer cells under dielectrophoresis. Through experiments and simulations, it was found that positive dielectrophoretic force guides the free-flowing particles to move towards the leading edge of the pearl chain, resulting in the preferential formation and growth of existing pearl chains.

Absolute quantification of priority bacteria in aquaculture using digital PCR

Roman Netzer et al.

Summary: Modern aquaculture systems are designed for intensive rearing of fish or other species, where water quality is crucial for fish health and production. Microorganisms play a crucial role in the system, and current monitoring methods for certain bacteria species lack precision, specificity, sensitivity, and are time-consuming.

A simple colorimetric method for viable bacteria detection based on cell counting Kit-8

Xianhong Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, CCK-8 was used for the first time to detect live bacteria concentration based on the redox reaction with dehydrogenase. Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were chosen as model bacteria, showing a good linear relationship in a wide concentration range. The CCK-8 based method demonstrated high sensitivity and potential for high-throughput bacterial detection.
