Modeling and measuring glucose diffusion and consumption by colorectal cancer spheroids in hanging drops using integrated biosensors

Nassim Rousset et al.

Summary: As 3D in vitro tissue models become more prevalent, analyzing the gradients and heterogeneity of nutrient and metabolite concentrations becomes more challenging. In this study, the researchers used electrochemical biosensors to measure glucose concentrations around tissue models, allowing them to study size-dependent metabolism data.

Microfluidic Co-Culture Platform to Recapitulate the Maternal-Placental-Embryonic Axis

Julia A. Boos et al.

Summary: The safety assessment of developmental toxicants on pregnant women is challenging, as systemic effects in embryo-maternal interactions are largely unknown. A dedicated microfluidic device has been developed for co-cultivation of a placental barrier and 3D embryoid bodies to enable systemic toxicity testing at the embryo-maternal interface, featuring simple handling and recuperation of tissue models for in-depth analysis at the tissue and single-cell level.

3D Printing of Monolithic Capillarity-Driven Microfluidic Devices for Diagnostics

Clement Achille et al.

Summary: Rapid diagnostic testing at the site of the patient is essential when a fully equipped laboratory is not accessible. 3D-printed microfluidic devices offer a scalable route to low-cost diagnostics and eliminate the need for assembly of discrete components. The seamless transition between digital data and physical objects allows for rapid design iterations and opens up perspectives on distributed manufacturing.

A Microphysiological Cell-Culturing System for Pharmacokinetic Drug Exposure and High-Resolution Imaging of Arrays of 3D Microtissues

Christian Lohasz et al.

Summary: Understanding the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic relationship of a drug candidate is crucial for determining effective treatment regimens. Current testing strategies are inefficient in characterizing in vivo responses to fluctuating drug concentrations during multi-day treatment cycles. The developed microfluidic system enables in vitro culture of three-dimensional spheroids, application of specific dynamic drug exposure profiles, and in-situ analysis of drug effects at tissue and single-cell level.

A Microfluidic Hanging-Drop-Based Islet Perifusion System for Studying Glucose-Stimulated Insulin Secretion From Multiple Individual Pancreatic Islets

Patricia Wu Jin et al.

Summary: A new generation microfluidic hanging-drop-based islet perifusion platform was developed to study dynamic insulin secretion from individual pancreatic islets with high temporal resolution. The platform was redesigned to increase experimental throughput and simplify operation, achieving continuous insulin release observation with reproducible results. This device will be valuable in islet and diabetes research for studying alterations in insulin secretion dynamics.
