High performance liquid analyte sensing based on Bloch surface wave resonances in the spectral domain

P. Hlubina et al.

Summary: The paper presents the design of a truncated one-dimensional photonic crystal comprising TiO2/SiO2 bi-layers for a highly sensitive liquid analyte sensor utilizing Bloch surface wave resonances. Experimental and theoretical results show that BSW resonances exhibit high sensitivity and performance metrics for both p- and s-polarized waves. This alternative to SPR sensors offers advantages of higher figure of merit and mechanical robustness, particularly evident in responses to aqueous solutions of NaCl across different refractive index ranges.

Spectral Characterization of Mid-Infrared Bloch Surface Waves Excited on a Truncated 1D Photonic Crystal

Agostino Occhicone et al.

Summary: The study highlights the important role of mid-infrared spectroscopy in label-free sensing, particularly in chemical recognition. A novel vibrational sensing scheme based on Bloch surface waves on 1D photonic crystals is proposed to enhance the sensitivity of mid-infrared sensors. The experimental demonstration of sustaining specific modes in a customized Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy setup within a certain wavelength range indicates the potential of the proposed method.

Controlled switching of the optical surface waves in one-dimensional photonic crystals containing left-handed materials in the presence of a chiral metamaterial as a cap layer

J. Bashiri et al.

Summary: This theoretical study investigates the localization and switching properties of surface waves at the interface between a one-dimensional photonic crystal and a homogeneous medium with chiral metamaterial as a cap layer. The results show that the chirality parameter of the cap layer significantly affects the type and localization of surface waves with transverse electric polarization. These findings provide a useful insight into the properties of surface waves in photonic devices and metamaterial systems.

M. Gryga et al.

Summary: The sensing abilities of a one-dimensional photonic crystal (1DPhC) were analyzed theoretically and experimentally using a new wavelength interrogation interference method. The research focused on gas sensing based on Bloch surface wave (BSW) resonance and liquid analyte sensing based on self-referenced guide-mode resonance (GMR), achieving high sensitivity and figure of merit (FOM) values. The experimental results confirmed the theoretical models, demonstrating accuracy and repeatability in the measurements.

Dual Topological Features of Weyl Semimetallic Phases in Tetradymite BiSbTe3

Z. Z. Zhou et al.

Summary: The study reveals the dual topological features of Weyl semimetallic phases in BiSbTe3, showing helical Dirac-type surface states and Weyl points at the Fermi level, making them easily observable in experiments. The separation of helical surface states and projected Weyl nodes in momentum space is attributed to mirror symmetries.

Titanium nitride as a plasmonic material for excitation of Tamm plasmon states in visible and near-infrared region

Samir Kumar

Summary: This study demonstrated the existence of Tamm plasmon polariton modes at the interface of one-dimensional photonic crystals and metal nitrides, with a focus on titanium nitride as an alternative plasmonic material. Theoretical calculations and spectral property evaluations were conducted, along with investigations into the optimum TiN thickness for TPP excitation. The angular dispersion characteristics of the TPP modes in TiN-PhC configurations were also explored, providing insights for designing devices based on TPPs.

Dae-Kyoung Kim et al.

Summary: The research revealed that the Bi2Se3/BP heterostructure exhibits high-efficiency photocharacteristics due to its narrow band gap and high mobility of the Dirac surface state. Furthermore, the heterostructure can form heterojunctions in the sharp interface region, resulting in a strong built-in electric field and contribution to photoexcited carrier tunneling through the interactive interfacial region.
