Grand unification and the Planck scale: an SO(10) example of radiative symmetry breaking

Aaron Held et al.

Summary: This article investigates radiative symmetry breaking, constrains the viable initial conditions for scalar couplings, and outlines the feasible parameter space of any underlying theory of quantum gravity. The constraining power of the blueprint is demonstrated within a non-supersymmetric SO(10) grand unification theory.

Weak-gravity bound in asymptotically safe gravity-gauge systems

A. Eichhorn et al.

Summary: In this paper, we investigate the existence of the weak-gravity bound in systems with more than one gauge field for the first time. We find that systems with 12 gauge fields, such as the Standard Model, still exhibit a weak-gravity bound, and that the gravitational fixed point can evade it. Additionally, we test the robustness of previous results on the weak-gravity bound by exploring their dependence on a gravitational gauge parameter. Furthermore, the existence of the weak-gravity bound has important implications for the spacetime dimensionality.

The nonperturbative functional renormalization group and its applications

N. Dupuis et al.

Summary: The renormalization group is crucial in physics for determining the low-energy properties of systems and searching for ultraviolet completions. The nonperturbative functional renormalization group (FRG) method is a modern implementation of Wilson's RG, providing a framework to study models with correlated degrees of freedom over long distances. It is based on an exact functional flow equation and has applications in various fields of physics.

The weak-gravity bound and the need for spin in asymptotically safe matter-gravity models

Gustavo P. de Brito et al.

Summary: In the asymptotic-safety paradigm, a weak-gravity bound is discovered in scalar-gravity systems, where gravitational fluctuations exceeding a critical strength can generate complex fixed-point values in higher-order scalar interactions. Asymptotic safety can only be achieved with sufficiently weak gravitational interactions, as the fixed point lies beyond the critical strength within truncations of matter-gravity dynamics, unless spinning matter is also included in the model.

Towards a Higgs mass determination in asymptotically safe gravity with a dark portal

Astrid Eichhorn et al.

Summary: There are indications suggesting that a UV completion of the Standard Model with gravity could constrain the Higgs self-coupling, resulting in a prediction of the Higgs mass close to the vacuum stability bound. The predicted value depends on the top quark mass and dark fields coupled through a Higgs portal, and the toy model Higgs mass can be lowered due to mixing effects in the dark sector with spontaneous symmetry breaking.

Light Higgs boson from multi-phase criticality in dynamical symmetry breaking

Kristjan Kannike et al.

Summary: The Coleman-Weinberg mechanism can achieve dynamical symmetry breaking in different phases, where some scalars have loop-suppressed mass. Additional scalars beyond the pseudo-Goldstone bosons may become light at critical points in the parameter space. This mechanism's minimal implementation in multi-scalar models shows how loop-suppressed masses and mixings can be computed, with relevance to the Higgs boson.

Generalized vanishing theorems for Yukawa couplings in heterotic compactifications

Lara B. Anderson et al.

Summary: Heterotic compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds often display textures of vanishing Yukawa couplings in their low energy description. Recent results have used differential geometric methods to explain the origin of this structure. A vanishing theorem attributed the effect to the embedding of the Calabi-Yau manifolds of interest inside higher dimensional ambient spaces. This paper utilizes an algebro-geometric approach to provide an alternative derivation of these results, highlighting the ubiquity of textures of vanishing Yukawa couplings in heterotic compactifications.

Safety in darkness: Higgs portal to simple Yukawa systems

Astrid Eichhorn et al.

Summary: This research suggests a direct link between the nature of dark matter and the fundamental quantum structure of spacetime in the asymptotic-safety framework. A toy model for the visible Higgs-Yukawa sector of the Standard Model, coupled to a dark sector through a portal coupling, illustrates the potential for the model to become asymptotically safe, have enhanced predictive power, and predict calculable values for all interactions.

Summary: By setting up a consistent background field formalism, we conducted a detailed study on the renormalization group flow of gravity coupled to Nf Dirac fermions, identifying two infinite families of interacting RG fixed points. These fixed points correspond to quasi-chiral and non-chiral fixed points, showing potential for high-energy completion and becoming weakly coupled in the large Nf-limit.

Stability of domain walls in models with asymmetric potentials

Tomasz Krajewski et al.

Summary: When symmetry is explicitly broken, nearly degenerate minima in the potential lead to the creation of a metastable network of domain walls. The decay time of this network depends on differences in potential values, asymmetries around minima, and initial field distributions. Asymmetry around the maximum separating minima is a novel factor that significantly influences decay time.

Gravitational corrections to two-loop beta function in quantum electrodynamics

L. Ibiapina Bevilaqua et al.

Summary: In this study, the framework of effective field theory is used to couple Einstein's gravity to quantum electrodynamics and determine the gravitational corrections to the two-loop beta function of the electric charge. The results show that gravitational corrections do not significantly alter the running behavior of the electric charge, but instead contribute positively to the beta function, causing the electric charge to grow even faster.

Functional renormalization and the (MS)over-bar scheme

Alessio Baldazzi et al.

Summary: Working with scalar field theories and specific choices of regulator in the functional renormalization group equation, we were able to replicate the results of dimensional regularization at one and two loops. The resulting flow equations can be viewed as nonperturbative extensions of the (MS) over bar scheme, with successful recovery of all the multicritical models in two dimensions. We discussed a possible generalization to any dimension and showed that the method preserves nonlinearly realized symmetries, providing a clear advantage over other regulators.
