Recent progress in dehydrogenation catalysts for heterocyclic and homocyclic liquid organic hydrogen carriers

Yeongin Jo et al.

Summary: Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) are promising for H-2 storage and transportation, with the most stringent limitation being high temperatures required for the dehydrogenation reaction. Pd-based catalysts are preferred in the conversion of heterocyclic LOHC due to preferential adsorption of heteroatoms, while Pt-based catalysts dominate in the cleavage of C-H bonds for homocyclic LOHC. Efforts are needed to inhibit the generation of byproducts and improve overall performance and stability.

Highly monodisperse sub-nanometer and nanometer Ru particles confined in alkali-exchanged zeolite Y for ammonia decomposition

Junyoung Cha et al.

Summary: The study investigated the preparation method and catalytic performance of nanometer-sized Ru particles deposited on four different alkali-exchanged zeolite Y supports. The results showed that Ru/Rb-Y exhibited the highest catalytic activity, mainly attributed to the high basicity of Rb-Y zeolite and the confined dispersion of Ru particles, which led to an open pore structure of the zeolite.

RuO2-Ru/Hβ zeolite catalyst for high-yield direct conversion of xylose to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol

Rizki Insyani et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated a one-pot conversion of xylose to THFOL using RuO2-Ru/H beta catalyst, achieving high THFOL yield through various synthesis methods and reaching almost complete conversion of xylose with a yield of 61.8%. The analysis revealed that the formation of RuO2 at specific sites promoted the direct conversion of FFA to THFOL, leading to a high yield and suppressing the formation of byproducts.

Remarkably fast low-temperature hydrogen storage into aromatic benzyltoluenes over MgO-supported Ru nanoparticles with homolytic and heterolytic H2 adsorption

Tae Wan Kim et al.

Summary: This study introduced a highly active Ru/MgO catalyst for hydrogenation of monobenzyltoluene and dibenzyltoluene at low temperatures, exhibiting faster storage rate and superior kinetic parameters compared to other supported Ru catalysts. The better catalytic performance is attributed to the strong adsorption capability of monobenzyltoluene and hydrogen by Ru/MgO, as well as the heterolytic H-2 dissociation near the Ru-MgO interface confirmed by DFT calculations.

Electronic metal-support interactions and their promotional effect on CO2 methanation on Ru/ZrO2 catalysts

Shilong Chen et al.

Summary: In metal-support interactions, discrimination between electronic and structural effects is often difficult due to contributions from both. A combined experimental/theoretical study showed the direct action of EMSIs, excluding the impact of structural modifications like partial overgrowth of metal nanoparticles. Charge transfer from O-vacancies in the ZrOx surface region to adjacent Ru nanoparticles played a key role in enhancing catalytic activity.

Heterolytic cleavage of dihydrogen (HCD) in metal nanoparticle catalysis

Israel Cano et al.

Summary: Heterolytic cleavage of H-2 followed by transfer of hydrogen species to polarized groups is an effective strategy for achieving high selectivities in catalytic hydrogenation reactions. In both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, metal complexes and nanoparticles can cooperate with ligands and supports to promote this process and selectively reduce unsaturated groups. Recent advancements have shown promise in using supported metal nanoparticles functionalized by organic ligands, combining the benefits of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts for increased industrial interest.
