Differences in Inflammation, Treatment, and Outcomes Between Black and Non-Black Patients Hospitalized for COVID-19: A Prospective Cohort Study

Summary: Racial disparities exist among COVID-19 hospitalized patients, with Black patients having a higher prevalence of risk factors and a greater need for renal replacement therapy and mechanical ventilation. Black patients receive less medication treatment and participate less in clinical trials. Black race is associated with lower levels of inflammatory markers and higher odds of death, mechanical ventilation, and renal replacement therapy. The differences in outcomes become non-significant after adjusting for medication use.
