Study on a Damage Model and Uniaxial Compression Simulation Method of Frozen-Thawed Rock

Qiang Feng et al.

Summary: The study found that with an increasing number of freeze-thaw cycles, the elastic modulus, peak strength and wave velocity of yellow sandstones gradually decrease, while the peak strain and porosity increase. An energy evolution law with different freeze-thaw cycles was analyzed, a freeze-thaw damage model was established, and a functional relationship between mesoscopic parameters and freeze-thaw cycles was formulated.

Experimental Study of the Anisotropic Frost Heave Characteristics of Rock Surrounding Tunnels in Cold Regions

Qiang Feng et al.

Summary: A nonuniform frost heave test device was developed to study the frost heave deformation law of surrounding rock under certain stress environments. The results showed significant nonuniform frost heave characteristics under different stress boundary conditions.

An analytical solution for the frost heaving force and displacement of a noncircular tunnel

Yimo Zhu et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel noncircular tunnel solution for stress and deformation analysis and design in cold regions, with a case study validating the accuracy of the analytical solution. It also addresses the uneven distribution of additional stress caused by frost heaving in the analytical solution, which may pose a threat to the safety of tunnel structures.

Evolutions of the unfrozen water content of saturated sandstones during freezing process and the freeze-induced damage characteristics

Lei Weng et al.

Summary: In this study, LF-NMR tests were conducted on frozen sandstone samples to analyze the unfrozen water content and changes in the freezing process. The experimental results show that the pore size distribution significantly affects the speed of water-ice phase transition, with larger pores leading to faster transitions. Freeze-induced strains in frozen sandstones increase rapidly between 0 degrees C to -10 degrees C, then stabilize, and the impact of movable water on freezing strain depends on pore size distribution.
