Local adaptation and spatiotemporal patterns of genetic diversity revealed by repeated sampling of Caenorhabditis elegans across the Hawaiian Islands

Timothy A. Crombie et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors investigated the natural ecology and genetic diversity of Caenorhabditis elegans on the Hawaiian Islands. They found that C. elegans predominantly inhabit moderately moist native forests at high elevations with cool temperatures. Furthermore, they identified seven genetically distinct groups and discovered regions associated with local adaptation. These findings contribute to our understanding of genetic diversity on remote volcanic archipelagos.

Benzimidazole-carbamate anthelmintics: Perspective candidates for the anticancer drug development

Parteek Prasher et al.

Summary: Cellular oncogenesis involves complex pathways that determine the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of cancer. Despite the interest in designing new drugs, therapeutic success has been limited and the number of approved anticancer drugs has declined since the 1990s. The development of novel candidate drugs requires significant time and funding, and drug resistance remains a challenge. Repurposing drugs offers a faster approach, but the generic profile of repurposed drugs discourages commercial sponsors from funding trials.

Epistatic, synthetic, and balancing interactions among tubulin missense mutations affecting neurite growth in Caenorhabditis elegans

Ho Ming Terence Lee et al.

Summary: This study identified different types of mutations in tubulins and revealed complex genetic interactions among them, providing insights into the regulation of microtubule functions. The mutations showed various effects, including additive and synthetic effects, epistasis, and balancing between destabilizing and stabilizing effects on microtubules.

Newly identified parasitic nematode beta-tubulin alleles confer resistance to benzimidazoles

Clayton M. Dilks et al.

Summary: Infections by parasitic nematodes have significant health and economic impacts globally, with increasing resistance to anthelmintic drugs. Understanding resistance mechanisms and evaluating the effects of new alleles are crucial. The study found that the new alleles conferred resistance without negative fitness effects and provided strong advantages in drug conditions.

Two novel loci underlie natural differences in Caenorhabditis elegans abamectin responses

Kathryn S. Evans et al.

Summary: Researchers used Caenorhabditis elegans as a model organism to study macrocyclic lactone (ML) resistance, identifying three genomic regions on chromosome V that contribute to natural differences in response to abamectin. Two novel loci were discovered, likely representing new resistance mechanisms. By comparing genes in these new loci to those in the parasitic nematode Haemonchus contortus, potential shared resistance genes between nematode species were identified. Overall, this study highlights the advantages of using C. elegans to understand anthelmintic resistance in parasitic nematodes.

Expression Patterns and Levels of All Tubulin Isotypes Analyzed in GFP Knock-In C. elegans Strains

Kei Nishida et al.

Summary: Most organisms have multiple alpha- and beta-tubulin isotypes, and in Caenorhabditis elegans, four isotypes are broadly expressed in almost all tissues while others are expressed at lower levels in specific tissues or cell types. Different tubulin isotypes show tissue-specific expression patterns, with some isotypes playing a role in ciliated sensory neurons and others having inefficient incorporation into mitotic spindle microtubules.
