Effects of disturbance to moss biocrusts on soil nutrients, enzyme activities, and microbial communities in degraded karst landscapes in southwest China

Cai Cheng et al.

Summary: The study compared intact crusts with moss-free crusts in a degraded karst ecosystem and found that the removal of biocrust-forming mosses led to a significant decline in soil nutrient contents, enzyme activities, and changes in microbial communities, particularly in the bacterial community. This suggests the importance of moss biocrusts as hotspots of ecosystem functioning and precious microbial genetic resources in degraded landscapes.
