Nep1-Like Proteins From the Biocontrol Agent Pythium oligandrum Enhance Plant Disease Resistance Independent of Cell Death and Reactive Oxygen Species

Kun Yang et al.

Summary: Microbial necrosis and ethylene-inducing peptide 1 (Nep1)-like proteins (NLPs) enhance plant resistance against pathogens and activate plant defense. The necrosis-inducing activity of PyolNLP5 is dependent on specific amino acid residues, while plant resistance activation is independent of necrosis and reactive oxygen species accumulation. Non-cytotoxic PyolNLPs also enhance plant resistance and induce plant defense in a cell death-independent manner.

Molecular tug-of-war: Plant immune recognition of herbivory

Simon Snoeck et al.

Summary: This review discusses the mechanisms by which plants perceive and respond to chewing and piercing-sucking herbivores. It examines the recognition of herbivore-associated molecular patterns (HAMPs) and effectors by plant immune systems, and emphasizes the importance of these initial molecular interactions in resistance. The review also explores the potential evolution of immune receptor functions and the integration of sensing functions in plant-herbivore interactions.

A salivary calcium-binding protein from Laodelphax striatellus acts as an effector that suppresses defense in rice

Tian Tian et al.

Summary: The EF-hand Ca2+-binding protein LsECP1 in the saliva of small brown planthopper acts as an effector to impair host rice defense responses, promoting insect performance. Silencing LsECP1 through transgenic plant-mediated RNAi shows potential for pest management strategies.

A Phytophthora sojae CRN effector mediates phosphorylation and degradation of plant aquaporin proteins to suppress host immune signaling

Gan Ai et al.

Summary: The study identifies a virulence-related effector, CRN78, from the oomycete pathogen Phytophthora sojae, which promotes infection by inhibiting H2O2 accumulation in plants. Furthermore, CRN78 interacts with plant aquaporin proteins and regulates their phosphorylation for subsequent protein degradation. The phosphorylation mechanism of CRN78 on aquaporin proteins is highly conserved among higher plants and oomycete pathogens, suggesting a novel pathway for effector proteins to inhibit host cellular defenses.

Targeting of anti-microbial proteins to the hyphal surface amplifies protection of crop plants against Phytophthora pathogens

Yang Zhou et al.

Summary: The study found that Phytophthora-derived PI3P can serve as a control target, and using proteins that bind this lipid to direct anti-microbial peptides and proteins to the surface of pathogens can enhance plants' resistance. This method is not only applicable to Phytophthora pathogens but potentially to other plant pathogens with unique targets.

Field Cage Assessment of Feeding Damage by Riptortus pedestris on Soybeans in China

Wenjing Li et al.

Summary: Riptortus pedestris is a serious pest of soybeans, causing significant field damage losses. The study found that the R-4 stage of soybeans was the most sensitive to R. pedestris injury, and damage intensity increased with higher pest densities. Additionally, soybean nutrition factors changed after suffering R. pedestris injury.

Type 2 Nep1-Like Proteins from the Biocontrol Oomycete Pythium oligandrum Suppress Phytophthora capsici Infection in Solanaceous Plants

Kun Yang et al.

Summary: The study identified a total of 25 Necrosis- and Ethylene-inducing peptide 1-like proteins (NLPs) from Pythium oligandrum and Pythium periplocum, with some of them inducing necrosis in plants and showing biocontrol activities. Specifically, PyolNLP5 and PyolNLP7 were found to significantly reduce disease severity and suppress the in planta growth of Phytophthora capsici in solanaceous plants. The Phytophthora suppression effect of PyolNLP5 and PyolNLP7 is linked to the induction of antimicrobial plant defensin genes, which is irrelevant to reactive oxygen species accumulation.
