The Chinese pine genome and methylome unveil key features of conifer evolution

Shihui Niu et al.

Summary: This study provides important resources and insights into conifer evolution and further research on conifer adaptation and development. The researchers found that the large genome size of conifers is mainly due to intergenic regions and transposable element content. Large genes with long introns exhibit higher expression levels. Additionally, the expansion of gene families in conifers is mainly related to stress responses.

The Cycas genome and the early evolution of seed plants

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: Cycads, as one of the oldest lineages of seed plants, provide insights into the origin of key innovations and early diversification of seed plants. The genome of Cycas panzhihuaensis was studied, revealing evidence of ancient whole-genome duplication and horizontal gene transfer from fungi. Furthermore, a sex determination mechanism controlled by MADS-Box genes was found to be shared by cycads and Ginkgo. This study fills an important knowledge gap in genome structure and evolution in seed plants.

Morpho-Histology, Endogenous Hormone Dynamics, and Transcriptome Profiling in Dacrydium Pectinatum during Male Cone Development

Wenju Lu et al.

Summary: The study on cone development in Dacrydium pectinatum examined the morphological and anatomical changes, hormone dynamics, and gene expression profiling to better understand male cone development. It identified four main stages of male cone development and fluctuations in hormone levels. The transcriptome database analysis revealed critical genes for male cone development, providing new insights and foundational information for further studies on seed germination in the species.

Paclobutrazol Modulates Endogenous Level of Phytohormones in Inducing Early Flowering in Camellia tamdaoensis Hakoda et Ninh, a Golden Camellia Species

Xiaojuan Wei et al.

Summary: This study revealed the efficacy of PBZ in inducing flowering in C. tamdaoensis, a yellow-flowering camellia species native to Vietnam. Applications of 100 and 200 ppm PBZ resulted in an average of 13 and 30 flowers per 5-year-old plant, respectively, with significant changes in phytohormone dynamics. It suggests that PBZ treatment with specific hormonal changes can benefit floral initiation in golden camellias.
